Chapter 6: The Cry That Saved a Family

One year later, Ethan celebrated his first birthday.
The party wasn't held at an expensive resort.
It wasn't catered.
There were no luxury gifts.
Just family.
Neighbors.
Children laughing beneath colorful balloons.
The guest of honor, besides Ethan, was Margaret.
Emily handed her a small wrapped box.
Inside rested a silver necklace engraved with three simple words.
Because You Stayed.
Margaret wiped away tears.
"I only did what anyone would've done."
Emily smiled gently.
"No."
She looked toward Ethan chasing bubbles across the yard.
"You did what the right person does."
Ryan stepped forward.
"I owe you more than I'll ever repay."
Margaret shook her head.
"Then don't repay me."
She looked at Ethan.
"Spend the rest of your life making sure he never doubts that when he cries... someone will come."
Ryan glanced at his son, then at Emily.
He understood.
Love wasn't measured by expensive vacations, birthday celebrations, or luxury watches.
It was measured in ordinary moments when someone chose to stay instead of walk away.
The shattered watch had marked the end of one version of Ryan's life.
A baby's cry—and the compassion of a stranger—had begun another.
And every year after that, on Ethan's birthday, one extra chair was always set at the family table.
