Chapter 4: The House That Answered for Her

Ryan pulled into the driveway carrying designer shopping bags.

A limited-edition Swiss watch rested proudly on his wrist.

He smiled to himself.

Emily would probably still be pouting.

He rehearsed an apology that wasn't really an apology.

"You know how important this trip was."

He unlocked the front door.

"Em?"

Silence.

Strange.

The living room looked untouched.

He walked upstairs.

"Ethan?"

Nothing.

Then he reached the nursery.

The bassinet...

Empty.

His stomach tightened.

"Emily?"

The rocking chair sat overturned.

The rug had been professionally cleaned, yet faint stains remained near its edge.

His expensive watch slipped from his hand.

It struck the hardwood floor.

Glass exploded.

Ryan didn't even look down.

He ran through every room.

No Emily.

No Ethan.

No diaper bag.

No bottles.

Nothing.

His breathing became frantic.

He called Emily.

The ringtone echoed...

From upstairs.

Her phone still lay beside the nursery chair.

Cold.

Dead.

Ryan's hands began shaking.

Then he noticed something taped to the refrigerator.

A business card.

Denver Regional Medical Center.

Below it was a handwritten note.

Your wife and son are alive because someone else showed up.

Signed,

Margaret Ellis.

Ryan felt his knees buckle.

For the first time since leaving for Aspen...

He was afraid.

He drove to the hospital faster than he had ever driven in his life.

When he reached Emily's floor, a nurse stepped directly into his path.

"You can't go in."

"My wife—"

"She almost died."

"I know, but—"

"No."

Her voice remained calm.

"You don't know."

She handed him Emily's medical chart summary.

Admission time.

Critical condition.

Emergency surgery.

Three days unconscious.

Ryan's face turned white.

"I... I didn't know."

May you like

The nurse looked him directly in the eyes.

"That's because you never answered."
