Chapter 5: What Love Looks Like

Ryan finally saw Emily the next morning.
She held Ethan against her chest.
The baby slept peacefully.
Emily looked weaker than he had ever seen her.
But her eyes were stronger.
Ryan stepped closer.
"I'm sorry."
Emily didn't answer.
"I made the biggest mistake of my life."
Still nothing.
He began crying.
"I should've stayed."
Emily spoke quietly.
"You should've believed me."
That sentence hurt more than any scream could have.
Over the next several weeks, Ryan learned truths that no one could soften.
He watched the home security footage.
Emily begging him not to leave.
Him rolling his eyes.
Calling her dramatic.
Closing the front door.
Minutes later...
Emily collapsing in the hallway while still trying to reach Ethan.
Then nearly twenty minutes later...
Margaret entering the house.
Calling 911.
Holding Ethan.
Praying beside Emily until paramedics arrived.
Ryan couldn't finish the video.
He buried his face in his hands.
"I left them."
He sold the luxury watch.
Canceled the country club membership.
Stopped traveling with the friends who had encouraged him to ignore his wife.
None of it erased what happened.
But for the first time in years, he stopped pretending responsibility belonged to someone else.
He started attending counseling.
Parenting classes.
Marriage therapy—though Emily made no promises about forgiveness.
She only promised honesty.
"Trust isn't rebuilt with words," she told him.
"It's rebuilt with choices."
May you like
Ryan nodded.
Every day afterward became another chance to make one.
