Chapter 5 – The Woman at the Door

The headlines spread faster than anyone expected.
WHITMAN CONSULTING REMOVES CEO AFTER EMERGENCY BOARD VOTE.
The article never mentioned Ethan by name, but rumors filled every business circle in the city. Investors demanded answers. Clients requested meetings. Richard's carefully polished reputation began to crumble before the day was over.
I wasn't interested in the headlines.
I was sitting on the living room floor of my father's lake house, helping Ethan build a castle from colorful blocks.
For the first time in days, he laughed.
It was quiet at first.
Then louder.
The sound brought tears to my eyes.
At that moment, the doorbell rang.
My father glanced through the security monitor before looking at me.
"She's alone."
I already knew who it was.
Brooke.
She stood outside wearing oversized sunglasses despite the cloudy afternoon. Gone was the confidence she had displayed in my kitchen. She looked exhausted, clutching a diaper bag with one hand and baby Chloe with the other.
"I'll handle it," I said.
I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
"What do you want?"
Her shoulders slumped.
"I didn't know."
I folded my arms.
"Didn't know what?"
"Richard told me you were separated. He said Ethan wasn't really part of his life anymore."
I stared at her.
"And you believed him?"
She lowered her eyes.
"I wanted to."
There was an honesty in her voice that hadn't existed before.
"He promised he was going to marry me."
"He also promised to love my son."
She nodded slowly.
"I found out this morning..." she whispered. "He lied to me too."
I remained silent.
"He emptied my savings account six months ago."
"What?"
"He convinced me to invest in one of his side businesses. There was never a business."
The realization hit me.
Richard hadn't simply betrayed one family.
He had built his life on deception.
Brooke took a deep breath.
"I came because there's something you deserve to know."
She handed me a small flash drive.
"I copied everything before he realized I had access."
I looked down at the device.
"Financial records?"
She nodded.
"Hidden bank accounts. Payments to shell companies. Private emails."
My pulse quickened.
"Why give this to me?"
Tears filled her eyes as she looked at the sleeping baby in her arms.
"Because I don't want Chloe growing up believing that hurting people is normal."
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
Finally, I accepted the flash drive.
"I can't forgive what happened to Ethan."
"I know."
"But if this helps protect our children..."
I slipped the drive into my pocket.
"...then I'll make sure the truth comes out."
Brooke gave a small, broken nod before walking back to her car.
I watched her leave, realizing something important.
Richard had spent years turning people against one another.
Now, one by one...
May you like
The people he had manipulated were beginning to choose the truth instead.
And the flash drive in my pocket was about to expose secrets far bigger than an affair.
