Chapter 3 – The Truth Behind the Company

The emergency room was quiet when Ethan finally fell asleep in my arms.

The nurse had cleaned the scrapes on his knees, wrapped them in soft bandages, and assured me they would heal within days.

The deeper wounds wouldn't.

As I stroked his hair, my phone vibrated.

Twenty-three missed calls.

All from Richard.

I silenced the phone.

Five minutes later, another call came in.

This time, it was my attorney.

"Are you ready?" Daniel Carter asked.

I looked at Ethan sleeping peacefully for the first time that day.

"Yes."

"I've reviewed the security footage."

"And?"

"It is more than enough to support temporary emergency custody if Richard contests the divorce."

I closed my eyes for a second.

"Good."

"There is something else."

His voice grew more serious.

"I checked the financial records after your message."

My stomach tightened.

"What did you find?"

"The company Richard calls his... legally isn't."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel pulled up the incorporation documents.

"When Whitman Consulting expanded five years ago, your father invested through your family trust."

"I remember."

"Richard insisted he didn't need investors."

"He did."

"But he signed the restructuring documents anyway."

I remembered that meeting.

Richard had been in a hurry before boarding a flight to New York.

He barely glanced at the papers.

"What did he sign?"

Daniel answered carefully.

"He gave the trust controlling voting rights in exchange for the capital."

Silence.

"So technically..."

"You are the majority owner."

I looked out the hospital window into the dark parking lot.

Richard had spent years introducing himself as the CEO who built everything alone.

He wasn't.

Legally, he was simply the company's hired chief executive.

A CEO who could be removed.

Immediately.

Daniel continued.

"I've already notified the board that an emergency meeting has been requested for tomorrow morning."

"They'll come?"

"They have to."

"What about Richard?"

"He has no idea."

For the first time that night, I smiled.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I wanted justice.

Ethan deserved to grow up knowing that cruelty never wins.

Just then, another message appeared on my phone.

It was from Richard.

Amanda... please answer. We need to talk. Mother went too far. I can explain everything.

Seconds later, another notification arrived.

A photo.

Brooke.

Standing in my kitchen.

Holding a glass of wine.

The caption read:

Come home. Let's act like adults.

I stared at the picture for several seconds.

Then I noticed something she hadn't.

Behind her, reflected in the stainless-steel refrigerator door, was Richard.

His arm was wrapped comfortably around her waist.

The timestamp showed it had been taken...

Less than ten minutes earlier.

While his messages begged me to forgive him.

I quietly locked my phone.

Tomorrow wasn't going to be about explanations.

It was going to be about consequences.
