Chapter 4 – The Boardroom Reckoning

By nine o’clock the next morning, Whitman Consulting’s executive boardroom was full.

The atmosphere was unusually tense.

Richard walked in wearing a tailored charcoal suit, flashing the same confident smile he reserved for investors and clients. He greeted the directors with easy charm, completely unaware that every seat at the table had already received Daniel Carter’s legal briefing.

When he noticed me sitting beside Daniel, his smile faltered.

“Amanda?” he asked. “What are you doing here?”

“I’m attending a board meeting.”

He frowned.

“This meeting is for executives.”

Daniel slid a thick folder across the polished table.

“She is here as the majority shareholder.”

Richard laughed.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“No,” Daniel replied. “It’s documented.”

Richard opened the folder, flipping through pages faster and faster. His confidence disappeared with every signature he recognized—his own.

“These papers...” he muttered.

“I signed these years ago.”

“Yes,” Daniel said evenly. “You transferred fifty-one percent of the voting shares to the Whitmore Family Trust in exchange for expansion capital.”

Richard looked at me in disbelief.

“You knew?”

“I knew exactly what I signed,” I answered.

“And you never told me?”

“You never asked.”

A murmur spread around the room.

One of the board members cleared his throat.

“Mr. Whitman, the company has also received evidence of conduct that may expose us to serious legal and reputational risk.”

The security footage appeared on the large screen.

There was Ethan.

Small.

Scared.

Crawling across the marble floor.

Richard watched himself point toward the ground, silently ordering a frightened four-year-old to obey.

No one spoke.

Another director broke the silence.

“If this becomes public, every family-oriented contract we hold could be jeopardized.”

Richard stood abruptly.

“This is my private life!”

“No,” another board member replied. “The behavior of a company's chief executive is never entirely private.”

Daniel stood.

“On behalf of the majority shareholder, I move for an immediate vote to remove Richard Whitman as Chief Executive Officer pending investigation.”

Richard turned toward me.

“You can’t do this.”

I met his eyes without hesitation.

“I’m not doing this.”

I glanced at the frozen image of Ethan on the screen.

“You did.”

The chairman looked around the table.

“All those in favor?”

One by one...

Hands began to rise.

Then another.

And another.

Even the directors Richard considered his closest allies voted against him.

The final count was unanimous.

The chairman folded his hands.

“Effective immediately, Richard Whitman is relieved of all executive authority. Your company access, financial authorization, and building credentials are revoked.”

A security officer stepped into the room.

“Mr. Whitman,” he said politely, “I’ll escort you to collect your personal belongings.”

Richard stared at me, stunned.

Less than twenty-four hours earlier, he had told my son he didn’t belong in the family.

Now, surrounded by the empire he believed he owned...

Richard realized he no longer belonged there either.
