Chapter 8 - THE MAN IN THE RAIN

I met Brandon inside the townhouse library.
Dominic remained in the hallway.
Rebecca sat near the door.
Brandon noticed both.
“I wanted to speak to my wife privately.”
“You stopped treating our marriage as private when you announced a fiancée on a stage.”
He sat across from me.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he looked around the library.
“Was all of this always yours?”
“No.”
“It belongs to a family trust.”
“You could have told me.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because my last name changed every room before I spoke.”
“I wanted one person to see me first.”
Brandon laughed bitterly.
“So this was a test.”
“No.”
“It became one because you failed.”
His face tightened.
“I spent years believing I had to provide for someone who could have purchased my company.”
“You did not have to provide wealth.”
“You had to provide honesty.”
“You let your brothers interfere.”
“They rescued your employees from bankruptcy.”
“Without telling me.”
“I asked them not to.”
“That was humiliating.”
“I understand that now.”
He looked surprised.
I continued.
“My secrecy denied you information that mattered.”
“I was wrong.”
“But I did not force you to have an affair.”
“I did not force you to hide a son.”
“I did not forge my signature.”
“I did not teach Tessa to call Sophie illegitimate.”
Brandon lowered his head.
“I never used that word.”
“You built the room where she felt free to use it.”
He looked toward the stairs.
“Can I see Sophie?”
“No.”
“I am her father.”
“You are also the person she watched deny her place in your life.”
“I never denied her.”
“You introduced another child publicly while yours was blocked downstairs.”
His eyes filled with anger.
“You think your brothers are better than me?”
“This is not about replacing you.”
“Dominic is wearing my Father’s Day gift.”
“Sophie gave it to the man who came when we called.”
Brandon stood.
Rebecca rose too.
He forced himself to sit again.
“I loved you.”
“Past tense?”
He closed his eyes.
“I still love you.”
“And Vanessa?”
“I love her differently.”
“That sentence has protected selfish people for generations.”
He admitted the affair began during a technology conference six years earlier.
Vanessa became pregnant soon afterward.
Brandon believed telling me would destroy Arclight during its weakest year.
He hid the child.
Vanessa married another man briefly, allowing the world to assume Caleb belonged to him.
After her husband died, she and Brandon resumed the relationship.
Brandon told himself he was correcting the injustice of hiding his son.
Instead of telling the truth, he decided to erase the family that made his second life inconvenient.
“I was going to provide for you and Sophie,” he said.
“With a settlement?”
“A generous one.”
“In exchange for being rewritten as your unstable former wife.”
His silence answered.
I removed my wedding ring.
I placed it on the table.
Brandon stared at it.

“This is not because I am a Whitmore.”
“This is because I finally understand that you only respected power when you could see it.”
