Chapter 1 - THE CALL TO DOMINIC

The encrypted line rang once.
Then my brother answered.
“Allie?”
Dominic Whitmore’s voice was quiet.
That made it more dangerous.
“What happened?”
I stared at Tessa Caldwell beneath the gold lights of the Dominion Crest Grand Hotel.
She still wore that smug little smile.
Behind her, two security guards waited beside the private elevator.
Sophie stood pressed against my coat.
The paper necklace trembled in her tiny hands.
“Brandon is upstairs,” I said.
“With another woman.”
Dominic went completely silent.
“Tessa says the woman is his fiancée.”
Another pause.
“And there is a little boy.”
“How old?”
“I don’t know.”
“Where are you?”
“At the Crestview ballroom entrance.”
“Do not leave.”
“I don’t want Sophie to see any more of this.”
“She has already seen enough.”
His voice became colder.
“Keep her beside you.”
“I’m coming.”
Tessa laughed.
“Was that your heroic rescue call?”
I lowered the phone.
“My brother.”
“The one who sells used cars?”
She was referring to a lie I had told years earlier.
When Brandon asked about my family, I said Dominic worked in private investments.
Brandon interpreted that as small real estate deals.
I allowed him to.
I had wanted one relationship untouched by the Whitmore name.
Tessa looked at the guards.
“Escort them out.”
Neither man moved.
One touched the radio in his ear.
His expression changed.
“Ma’am, we’ve been ordered to hold the entrance.”
Tessa frowned.
“By whom?”
“The hotel’s ownership office.”
“This gala was booked by Arclight Dynamics.”
“The ownership office outranks the event desk.”
Tessa stepped closer.
“I am executive secretary to Brandon Cole.”
The guard remained calm.
“And this property belongs to Whitmore Hospitality.”
The color left Tessa’s face.
She looked back at me.
I had never told Brandon that my family owned the hotel.
I had never told him that Dominion Crest Bank, Whitmore Capital, and Whitmore Commercial Realty all belonged to different branches of the same family.
I had never told him that my brothers quietly arranged the credit line that rescued Arclight Dynamics from bankruptcy seven years earlier.
Brandon thought he had saved the company through talent and determination.
He had talent.
He had determination.
He also had three invisible Whitmore brothers preventing every lender from shutting his doors.
The private elevator chimed.
Tessa straightened immediately.
She expected Brandon.
Instead, Dominic stepped out.
He wore a black suit without a tie.
Nathaniel followed him, carrying a thin leather folder.
Then came Graham, my oldest brother, still in the dark suit he had worn at a Senate committee dinner.
Dominic’s eyes found Sophie first.
He knelt in front of her.
“Hey, little star.”
Sophie looked up.
“Uncle Dom.”
“What are you holding?”
“A necklace for Daddy.”
Dominic examined the crumpled paper chain.
Each colored loop had a word written in purple marker.
BEST.
DADDY.
EVER.
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“It’s beautiful.”
Sophie whispered:
“The lady said Daddy has a real family.”
Dominic looked at Tessa.
The temperature in the hallway seemed to drop.
Nathaniel opened the leather folder.
“Tessa Caldwell?”
She swallowed.
“Yes.”
“As of three minutes ago, every Arclight account held at Dominion Crest Bank has been placed under enhanced fraud review.”
Her eyes widened.
“You cannot freeze corporate accounts because of a family dispute.”
Nathaniel’s expression did not change.
“We can review them after receiving evidence of an undisclosed executive conflict, possible forged spousal consent, and covenant violations.”
Graham stepped forward.
“I am here as Alyssa’s brother.”
“Not in any official government capacity.”
“But I strongly recommend that no one deletes a message, modifies a guest list, or removes a camera file.”
Tessa looked toward me.
“You lied about who you are.”
“No.”
“I stopped explaining myself to people who measured worth by surnames.”
Dominic stood.
“Take us upstairs.”
Tessa shook her head.
“Brandon is in the middle of an important announcement.”
“That is exactly why we are going.”
She reached for her phone.
Dominic took one step closer.
“Call him.”
“Tell him Alyssa is here.”
May you like
Tessa’s fingers froze over the screen.
“And tell him she brought his daughter.”
