Chapter 16 - THE VERDICT
The jury deliberated for fourteen hours.
I waited at home with Sophie.
She was building a cardboard castle on the living room floor.
She knew her father was on trial.
She did not know every charge.
Children deserve truth in portions they can carry.
Rebecca called at 4:12 p.m.
Brandon was guilty of bank fraud.
Guilty of wire fraud.
Guilty of conspiracy.
Guilty of forging spousal consent.
Guilty of misusing corporate funds.
He was acquitted on one lesser record-retention charge.
Tessa received four years under her plea agreement.
Brandon faced more than a decade.
At sentencing, he asked permission to speak.
He did not blame me.
Not that day.
“I told myself I deserved the life I was building because I had worked hard.”
“I began treating every person around me as part of that construction.”
“Alyssa became the wife who had to remain quiet.”
“Vanessa became the future I displayed.”
“Caleb became proof.”
“Sophie became a complication.”
“Tessa became a tool.”
“Employees became numbers.”
“I called all of it leadership.”
He looked toward me.
“I did not understand that someone could love me and still refuse access.”
The judge sentenced him to eleven years.
Restitution consumed most of his personal assets.
His remaining Arclight shares entered a recovery trust for employees and creditors.
The divorce court later awarded me my lawful marital share.
I transferred a significant portion into trusts for Sophie and for employees harmed by the fraud.
Not because Brandon’s crimes were my responsibility.
