CHAPTER 5 — CHOOSING A DIFFERENT NAME

Six months later...
Snow covered the courthouse steps.
Reporters crowded behind barricades.
Vivienne Whitmore entered wearing a navy prison uniform instead of couture.
She never looked toward the cameras.
Inside the courtroom, prosecutors played the ballroom footage.
Again.
And again.
No explanation survived repeated truth.
The jury returned in less than three hours.
Guilty.
On every count connected to the assault.
Additional financial charges would follow.
Vivienne listened without visible emotion.
Only once did she glance toward Nathan.
He didn't look back.
Outside...
Nathan stood beside Caroline.
Their daughter slept peacefully inside a stroller wrapped in a cream blanket.
Healthy.
Laughing.
Alive.
Nathan held a folder.
Not legal papers.
A name change.
"I'm resigning."
Caroline looked at him.
"From everything."
"The company?"
"Yes."
"The foundation?"
"Yes."
"My family?"
He hesitated.
Then nodded.
"I'm tired of inheriting things I should have rejected."
She studied him.
People could apologize.
Few rebuilt themselves.
Fewer still accepted that forgiveness was never guaranteed.
"I don't know if I can love you again."
Nathan nodded.
"I know."
"But I hope someday..."
May you like
He looked down at their daughter.
"...she'll never have to wonder why her father stayed silent."
