CHAPTER 3 — THE FOLDER

St. Matthew's Medical Center smelled of antiseptic and fear.
Doctors rushed Caroline into emergency obstetrics while Nathan waited outside the operating suite, still wearing the tuxedo splattered with tiny drops of her blood.
He stared at them.
They looked impossibly small.
Yet they carried the weight of his entire marriage.
Across the hallway, Detective Elena Brooks arrived.
She had already spoken with hotel security.
"There are witnesses."
Nathan nodded.
"There are cameras."
Another nod.
Then came the sentence that emptied his face.
"And your mother's attorney requested copies before we did."
Nathan closed his eyes.
Of course she had.
An hour later...
Nora Bell walked into the hospital.
Still carrying the folder.
She asked for Detective Brooks.
"What is this?" the detective asked.
Nora placed the folder on the table.
"My resignation."
She pushed it forward.
"And everything Mrs. Whitmore hoped no one would ever read."
Inside were decades of secrets.
Private settlement agreements.
Threats.
Illegal payments.
Witness statements.
Emails.
Medical reports.
Board votes manipulated through intimidation.
Tax fraud.
Charitable foundation misuse.
Political favors.
And one small flash drive.
Nora looked exhausted.
"The ballroom wasn't the first time she hurt someone."
Detective Brooks stared at her.
"How many?"
Nora answered without emotion.
"I stopped counting."
Three floors above them...
A doctor finally emerged.
Nathan stood so quickly his chair tipped over.
"Your wife?"
The doctor smiled.
"She and the baby are alive."
Nathan nearly collapsed.
"But..."
May you like
His heart stopped again.
"...the next twenty-four hours will be critical."
