CHAPTER 4 — THE EMPIRE FALLS

The video reached the internet before sunrise.

Not because of the guests.

Because of hotel security.

Three angles.

High definition.

Slow motion.

Vivienne's heel hooked around the chair.

The chair sliding.

Caroline falling.

Nathan hesitating.

And finally—

Vivienne calmly saying,

"You should have left when I warned you."

By noon...

Every news network had it.

Sponsors withdrew.

Board members resigned.

The Whitmore Foundation announced an emergency investigation.

The family's investment partners suspended negotiations.

Stock prices tied to Whitmore Holdings dropped faster than anyone expected.

Money could survive scandal.

It rarely survived video.

Police arrived at the Whitmore estate just after lunch.

Vivienne answered the door herself.

She was dressed in cream silk.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect posture.

Perfect confidence.

"This is unnecessary."

Detective Brooks handed her the warrant.

"No."

She replied evenly.

"It isn't."

The handcuffs clicked.

For the first time in decades...

Vivienne Whitmore looked surprised.

Nathan watched the arrest on television from Caroline's hospital room.

He didn't change the channel.

He didn't defend his mother.

He simply watched.

Caroline opened her eyes.

"You don't have to stay."

He looked at her.

"I do."

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"You had to stay years ago."

Those words hurt more than any accusation.

Because they were true.
