Chapter 14 - ETHAN CHOOSES HIS SISTER
The call lasted four minutes.
Long enough.
Helen instructed Robert to take Ethan before the custody hearing.
She suggested a private plane.
A family property in the Bahamas.
She reminded him that Ethan was “the only heir who mattered.”
Robert barely spoke.
When the call ended, the room was silent.
Melissa was crying.
Robert stared at the phone.
“She really said it.”
I looked at him.
“She has been saying it for years.”
He nodded.
This time he did not argue.
The custody hearing was scheduled for Friday.
Helen did not know her call had been recorded.
She arrived in court wearing navy wool and pearls.
Perfect grandmother.
Concerned mother.
Victim.
Her attorney argued that I was unstable.
Then Mara played the dinner audio.
Helen’s laughter filled the courtroom.
Even a dog wouldn’t touch that one.
Then Lily’s whisper.
Why do they always do this to me?
Helen’s face tightened.
Next came the hallway camera.
Robert trying to force the study door.
Helen saying.
Get her phone.
Then the phone call.
Take Ethan.
Leave the girl with Claire.
The judge looked over his glasses.
Helen’s attorney stopped taking notes.
Mara finished with the boarding school document.
The judge turned toward Robert.
“Mr. Mercer, did you authorize your daughter’s removal from the country?”
“No.”
“Did you know your mother planned it?”
“No.”
“Did you support differential treatment between your children?”
Robert looked toward me.
Then toward Ethan and Lily sitting with a child advocate in the back.
“Yes.”
The word hurt him.
But he said it.
The judge nodded.
“That may be the first useful answer you have given today.”
Robert lowered his head.
Then Ethan asked the child advocate something.
She approached the bench.
After a brief conversation, the judge allowed Ethan to speak privately with counsel present.
Later, Mara told me what he said.
“I don’t want Grandma to choose me if choosing me hurts Lily.”
That sentence broke my heart.
The court extended the protective order.
Helen received no contact.
Robert received supervised visits.
The judge ordered family evaluations and counseling.
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted.
Helen ignored them.
Then she saw Ethan through the glass doors.
She called his name.
He stopped.
For a second, I thought he might run to her.
