Chapter 11 - HELEN’S PLAN

The email chain was six pages long.

Helen had been planning for years.

Not because she hated Lily.

Not originally.

Lily was simply the place where her contempt became visible.

Helen believed the Bennett fortune should pass through Ethan.

A male heir.

A Mercer.

She believed my father had made a mistake by leaving control to me.

She believed Robert’s marriage had corrected that mistake.

The emails were astonishing.

Make Claire comfortable.

Let her stay home with the children.

You handle the board.

Eventually everyone will forget whose company it was.

Another message.

Do not let her become interested in governance again.

Another.

Ethan must understand early that responsibility will be his.

And then Lily appeared.

Girls are sentimental.

Do not let Claire split the legacy because Lily cries.

I read every word.

My anger became quieter with each page.

That frightened me more than rage.

Robert knew about some of it.

He had answered.

Relax.

Claire trusts me.

Another time.

She has no interest in the company.

And finally.

If necessary, we use the competency route.

Mara looked toward me.

“That connects directly to the custody filing.”

I nodded.

The pattern was complete.

They had not simply taken money.

They had built a story around me.

Passive wife.

Emotional mother.

Unstable woman.

Difficult daughter.

All while Robert quietly positioned himself as the adult responsible for the Bennett legacy.

It was almost elegant.

Until Helen became careless.

Until Lily’s burnt steak.

Until one ugly dinner exposed the architecture beneath years of small cruelty.

My phone rang.

Melissa.

Robert’s sister.

I answered.

“Claire?”

She sounded frightened.

“What?”

“I need to show you something.”

“Where are you?”

“In my car.”

“Are you safe?”

“Yes.”

She inhaled.

“I found a folder in Mom’s apartment.”

“What folder?”

“Board proxies.”

My hand tightened.

“How many?”

“Seven.”

Mara heard.

Her expression changed.

Melissa continued.

“They’re signed.”

“By whom?”

“Directors.”

My stomach dropped.

The board had twelve seats.

Seven proxies meant control.

“When were they signed?”

“Some months ago.”

“Melissa.”

“Yes?”

“Bring them to Mara’s office.”

She was silent.

Then she whispered.

“Claire, there’s something else.”

“What?”

“Mom didn’t just plan to remove you.”

May you like

I waited.

“She planned to remove Robert too.”
