Chapter 10 - MY FATHER’S SIGNATURE

For three seconds, I could hear only my heartbeat.

My father’s signature looked real.

The looping D.

The hard downward stroke in Bennett.

The date was accurate.

Six months before his death.

Robert watched my face.

He wanted panic.

He needed it.

Instead, Mara picked up the document.

“Original?”

“Certified copy.”

“Where is the original?”

“Private archive.”

“Which archive?”

“My attorney has it.”

Mara smiled faintly.

“That is not an answer.”

Robert sat down.

“It is enough to stop this meeting.”

Thomas looked toward legal counsel.

Technically, he was right.

Any credible challenge to voting authority required review.

The meeting recessed.

Robert walked past me.

He leaned close.

“You should have talked to me before you tried to humiliate my mother.”

I looked at him.

“This is about Helen?”

“It became about survival.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“It was always about survival for you.”

His smile disappeared.

Mara pulled me into my father’s old office.

“Did Daniel ever mention that document?”

“Never.”

“Could he have signed it?”

“No.”

“How certain are you?”

I looked at her.

“One hundred percent.”

She studied me.

“Then we prove it.”

The forensic document examiner arrived that afternoon.

So did the trust’s archival counsel.

For hours they compared signatures.

Ink.

Paper.

Notary stamps.

Dates.

Then one of them found something.

The document referenced Bennett Foods Holdings LLC.

A company that did not exist on the date my father supposedly signed it.

It had been formed eleven months later.

Mara looked at me.

“He forged it.”

I felt no surprise.

Only exhaustion.

But the forensic examiner raised a finger.

“Not necessarily Robert.”

We looked at him.

“The signature was digitally reconstructed.”

Mara frowned.

“From what?”

“We’d need the source.”

The archive team searched every scanned document Robert had accessed.

One match appeared.

My father’s original estate planning letter.

The scan had been opened from a Bennett Foods executive account four months earlier.

User credentials.

HELEN.MERCER.

I stared at the screen.

Helen had not simply supported Robert.

She had built the weapon.

Then the investigator clicked another file.

An email opened.

FROM HELEN MERCER.

TO ROBERT MERCER.

SUBJECT: CLAIRE.

The first sentence read.

If she ever wakes up, we lose the company.
