Chapter 6 – The Night They Came

The first warning came at 1:17 a.m.

A sharp buzz vibrated through Christopher's phone.

PERIMETER BREACH DETECTED.

He was already moving before the second alert appeared.

Three security cameras had gone dark.

Someone had cut the power to the east side of the property.

Christopher opened the bedroom door without making a sound.

Emma was asleep, hugging the stuffed rabbit Yvette had bought her years ago. For the first time since the pool incident, her face looked peaceful.

He refused to let anyone take that peace away.

He touched the earpiece clipped to his collar.

"Status."

The reply came instantly.

"Three unidentified individuals breached the outer fence. Armed. We're intercepting."

Another voice interrupted.

"Sir... there's a fourth suspect."

"Where?"

"Inside."

Christopher's blood ran cold.

The safe house had been compromised.

He scooped Emma into his arms.

She stirred.

"Daddy?"

"It's okay," he whispered. "Stay quiet. I'm right here."

She wrapped her arms around his neck without another question.

Christopher slipped into the hidden hallway built behind the master bedroom years earlier as an emergency escape route. Only four people had ever known it existed.

His father.

The architect.

Christopher.

And—

His thoughts stopped.

His father.

If Estelle knew about the passage...

She had never mentioned it.

Which meant she either didn't know...

Or she had someone inside.

The emergency lights flickered red.

Footsteps echoed upstairs.

Heavy.

Measured.

Not police.

Someone kicked open the bedroom door they had just left.

Christopher held Emma tighter.

She buried her face against his shoulder, trying not to cry.

The narrow passage led to an underground garage.

Waiting there was Daniel Mercer.

The lawyer looked shocked.

"I came as soon as security called."

Christopher unlocked the armored SUV.

"Take Emma."

Daniel blinked.

"What about you?"

"I'm ending this tonight."

Before Daniel could argue, Christopher crouched in front of his daughter.

Emma's small hands held his face.

"Are you coming back?"

He smiled, though it hurt.

"I made you a promise."

"No one will ever hurt you again."

"I intend to keep it."

Emma nodded bravely as Daniel drove away.

Christopher watched the taillights disappear into the darkness.

Only then did he turn back toward the mansion.

The intruders had expected to hunt a frightened father.

Instead...

They were about to meet a man who had finally stopped protecting the Pierce name.

As he stepped through the hidden entrance, a figure emerged from the shadows.

Victor Kane.

The family fixer.

He lowered his weapon with a cold smile.

"I was hoping you'd come alone."

Christopher didn't flinch.

"I was hoping the same thing."

Somewhere beyond the walls, sirens began to rise.

Neither man moved.

May you like

Both understood the truth.

By sunrise, one of them would be leaving the Pierce legacy behind forever.
