Chapter 3 – The Will They Buried

Christopher stared at the handwritten clause until the words seemed to burn into the page.
His father's signature was unmistakable.
So was the faded blue ink from the legal witness stamp.
Daniel carefully removed another document from the folder and laid it beside the original.
"This is the version filed with probate after your father's death."
Christopher compared the two.
The final paragraph—the one protecting any biological child—was gone.
In its place was a typed amendment stating that control of Pierce Holdings would remain with the family board unless Christopher had a legally recognized heir at the time of inheritance.
Emma had been born in secret.
Rachel had died before the truth could be told.
No one had ever challenged the forged document.
Until now.
"Who had access to Father's papers?" Christopher asked.
Daniel didn't hesitate.
"Only three people."
He pointed to the list.
"Your mother."
"The family's former attorney."
"And the executor."
Christopher's jaw tightened.
"The attorney?"
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"Passed away six years ago."
"The executor?"
"Retired to Switzerland. He's been unreachable for months."
Christopher understood immediately.
Dead witnesses.
Missing witnesses.
Convenient timing.
Someone had planned this years before Rachel's accident.
A soft knock interrupted them.
Yvette stepped into the study, holding a small wooden box covered in dust.
"I found this hidden behind the false panel in Mr. Harrison Pierce's library."
Christopher frowned.
"My father's private cabinet."
Yvette nodded.
"It only opened after I used the old brass key he kept inside his desk."
She placed the box on the table.
Inside lay dozens of letters tied together with a navy ribbon.
The first envelope carried Rachel's handwriting.
If you're reading this, something has gone terribly wrong.
Christopher's hands shook as he unfolded the letter.
"Chris," it began.
"If I disappear before Emma is old enough to remember me, don't believe anyone who tells you it was an accident."
His heart pounded.
"Your mother came to see me."
"She offered money."
"When I refused to give up our baby, she smiled and said the Pierce family always protects its legacy."
Christopher's vision blurred.
He could almost hear Rachel's voice.
"Promise me one thing."
"Raise Emma to be kind."
"Never raise her to become like them."
A tear slipped down his cheek before he could stop it.
For years, he had blamed himself for failing Rachel.
Now he realized something far worse.
Rachel had tried to warn him.
He had simply trusted the wrong people.
Christopher folded the letter with trembling hands and looked at Daniel.
"No more secrets."
He stood, his grief hardening into resolve.
"Tomorrow morning, call every member of the Pierce Holdings board."
His eyes drifted toward the dark hallway leading to his mother's private wing.

"And tell my mother her reign ends at nine o'clock."
For the first time in decades, someone inside the Pierce family was finally going to answer for their crimes.
