Chapter 2 – Rachel's Secret

Christopher barely slept that night.

Emma refused to let go of his hand, even after she had fallen asleep in the guest room beside his study. Every few minutes she stirred, her frightened eyes opening just long enough to make sure he was still there.

Each time, he squeezed her fingers.

"I'm here."

Only then would she drift back to sleep.

He stood by the window, staring into the darkness outside the mansion. Rain tapped softly against the glass, pulling him back nine years.

Rachel Monroe had stood beneath a different storm, one hand resting protectively over her stomach.

"You have to promise me something," she had said.

Christopher remembered laughing nervously, believing she was worried about becoming a mother.

Instead, Rachel had looked him straight in the eyes.

"If anything happens to me, don't tell them she's yours."

He hadn't understood.

"My family would never hurt a child."

Rachel had smiled sadly.

"You still believe that."

Months later, Emma was born.

Three days after that, Rachel disappeared in what police ruled a highway accident.

Christopher had accepted the report because grief had left him too broken to ask questions.

Now, the pieces fit together with terrifying clarity.

Rachel hadn't been paranoid.

She had been afraid.

Someone had wanted the truth buried long before Emma could ever speak her first word.

A gentle knock interrupted his thoughts.

His attorney, Daniel Mercer, entered carrying a thick leather folder.

"I drove here as soon as Yvette called."

Christopher motioned for him to sit.

Daniel spread several documents across the desk.

"I reviewed your father's original estate plan."

Christopher frowned.

"And?"

Daniel looked unusually pale.

"The version your mother filed after your father died isn't the same document."

Christopher's pulse quickened.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying someone forged part of the Pierce family will."

Silence filled the room.

Daniel slid one page forward.

"The original names one primary heir."

Christopher looked down.

His own signature blurred as his hands trembled.

Then he saw the handwritten note his father had added years earlier.

Should Christopher have a biological child, that child shall inherit my controlling shares without exception.

Christopher stopped breathing.

Emma had never been the obstacle.

She had always been the rightful heir.

And someone in his own family had been willing to kill a little girl to erase that truth forever.
