Chapter 7 – The Trial of the Pierce Name

By sunrise, the front lawn of the Pierce estate had become a sea of flashing lights.
Police cruisers lined the driveway.
News helicopters circled overhead.
Neighbors watched from behind iron gates as officers escorted Victor Kane away in handcuffs. His suit was torn, and a fresh cut stretched across his forehead.
Christopher stood silently on the front steps, exhausted but unbroken.
Victor had underestimated him.
The moment Victor drew his weapon inside the mansion, Christopher had activated the emergency alarm hidden in his father's study. Every hallway had been sealed automatically, trapping the intruders until law enforcement arrived.
For the first time in decades, the Pierce family's secrets were no longer confined behind stone walls.
They belonged to the public.
Three weeks later, the courtroom was filled beyond capacity.
Journalists occupied every available seat.
Employees of Pierce Holdings sat shoulder to shoulder with curious spectators, all waiting for the trial that had become the nation's biggest headline.
At the defense table sat Estelle Pierce.
She looked as elegant as ever.
But her confidence had faded.
The prosecution called its first witness.
"Mrs. Yvette Sloan."
The elderly housekeeper walked slowly to the stand, placing one trembling hand on the Bible before taking the oath.
She told the jury everything.
How Emma had flinched whenever Juliette entered a room.
How meals had been withheld as punishment.
How bruises had been explained away as "childhood clumsiness."
Then she described the phone call she had overheard.
A child only needs one unattended accident.
The courtroom fell silent.
Next came the forensic audio expert.
He confirmed that the recording recovered from the pool house had not been edited.
Every voice was authentic.
Every timestamp matched.
Every word was real.
Then Christopher was called.
He didn't speak as the CEO of Pierce Holdings.
He spoke as a father.
"They didn't target Emma because she had done anything wrong," he said, looking directly at the jury.
"They targeted her because she was born."
His voice remained steady.
"My daughter became a threat the day she entered this world."
Across the courtroom, Estelle lowered her eyes for the first time.
Then the prosecutor played one final recording.
Juliette's frightened voice echoed through the speakers.
"Estelle planned everything."
"Rachel's accident..."
She began to sob.
"It wasn't an accident."
Gasps rippled through the courtroom.
Christopher closed his eyes.
For nine years, he had mourned Rachel.
Now, at last, he knew the truth.
She had never abandoned them.
She had been taken from them.
The judge called for order as the jury stared at Estelle in stunned silence.
