Chapter 1 – The Recording

Christopher Pierce didn't look back as he carried Emma through the front doors of the mansion.
She clung to him with trembling hands, her wet curls sticking to her cheeks, tiny sobs shaking her body every few seconds. He could still feel the icy water soaking through his shirt, but none of it mattered.
She was alive.
That was all that mattered.
Behind them, security escorted Juliette across the marble courtyard while servants stood frozen in stunned silence. For years, the elegant fiancée had ruled the house with perfect smiles and polished manners. Today, every carefully crafted lie had cracked apart.
"Mr. Pierce..."
The head of security hesitated.
"What about Mrs. Estelle?"
Christopher stopped walking.
His jaw tightened.
"Nobody leaves," he said quietly. "Not until I know exactly who tried to kill my daughter."
The words echoed through the grand entrance hall.
For the first time in years, the Pierce mansion felt less like a home and more like a crime scene.
Yvette Sloan stepped inside carrying the tiny recorder in both hands as though it weighed a hundred pounds.
"I've copied every file," she whispered.
Christopher nodded.
"Play it again."
The device clicked.
Static filled the room.
Then Juliette's familiar voice drifted through the speaker.
"If Emma disappears, everything changes."
A pause.
Another voice answered.
Older.
Sharper.
"Christopher has always been weak where that child is concerned."
Christopher closed his eyes.
He had heard those words once already beside the pool.
Hearing them inside his own home hurt even more.
Then came the sentence that made every servant stop breathing.
Estelle Pierce spoke without the slightest hint of remorse.
"Children drown every summer."
"People call it a tragedy."
"No one calls it murder."
Silence swallowed the room.
Emma buried her face against Christopher's shoulder.
Very softly, almost too softly to hear, she whispered,
"Daddy..."
Christopher froze.
She had never called him that before.
Slowly, he wrapped both arms around her.
May you like
"No one will ever hurt you again," he promised.
And for the first time since Rachel Monroe had died, Christopher realized protecting Emma would cost him everything he had ever inherited—including the Pierce name itself.
