Chapter 5 – The Woman Who Refused to Fall

The flashing lights outside Pierce Holdings drew reporters from every major network before noon.
Microphones crowded the entrance.
Cameras followed every movement.
PIERCE MATRIARCH QUESTIONED IN CHILD MURDER PLOT, one headline read across a news van's monitor.
Christopher ignored them all.
His only concern was the little girl waiting inside the safe house.
Emma hadn't asked about the reporters.
She hadn't asked about Juliette.
She had asked only one question.
"Is Grandma angry with me?"
The words hit Christopher harder than anything he had heard in the boardroom.
"No, sweetheart."
He knelt until they were eye level.
"You didn't do anything wrong."
Emma stared at the floor.
"Then... why didn't she like me?"
Christopher couldn't answer.
How could he explain greed to an eight-year-old?
How could he tell his daughter that adults had measured her life against company shares—and decided the shares were worth more?
He wrapped her in a hug.
"Sometimes people forget what love is."
"But they don't get to decide who deserves it."
Emma nodded slowly, though he could tell she didn't fully understand.
Maybe that was a blessing.
Across town, Estelle Pierce sat in an interrogation room.
Her attorney had arrived within minutes.
She answered every question with the same composed smile.
"I've never harmed my granddaughter."
"I never instructed anyone to harm a child."
"The recording is fabricated."
When detectives mentioned Rachel Monroe's diary, she merely folded her hands.
"A dead woman's fears aren't evidence."
Hours passed.
Without a direct witness linking Estelle to Rachel's death years earlier, prosecutors couldn't hold her on homicide.
Late that evening, she walked out of the precinct.
Reporters shouted questions.
She offered no reply.
A black sedan carried her away.
As the city lights blurred past the window, she finally looked at the man seated beside her.
Victor Kane.
The Pierce family's longtime fixer.
He had spent decades cleaning up scandals before they ever reached a courtroom.
"I assume Christopher believes he's won," Victor said quietly.
Estelle's lips curled into the faintest smile.
"He inherited his father's heart."
"And that's always been his greatest weakness."
Victor understood.
"You want me to recover the missing evidence?"
"I want everything gone."
"The diary."
"The recordings."
"The housekeeper."
She paused.
"And the child?"
Estelle looked out the window.
Her expression never changed.
"If Emma testifies, the Pierce family loses everything."
Her voice was calm.
"So make certain she never gets the chance."
Miles away, Christopher tucked Emma into bed.
She fell asleep holding his hand.

Neither of them knew that before midnight, a black SUV had already turned onto the quiet road leading toward the safe house.
The war for the Pierce fortune had entered its most dangerous chapter.
