CHAPTER 5 — After the Curtains Opened (ENDING)
Morning came slowly.
Not dramatic.
Not loud.
Just light returning to a room that had almost lost everything inside it.
Sophie survived.
Barely.
Weeks later, she sat by the hospital window, thinner but awake.
Daniel held her hand like he was afraid the world might take her again if he let go.
Carol entered quietly.
No anger.
No judgment left.
Only understanding.
“I’m sorry,” she said softly. “For what I said… that morning.”
Sophie looked at her for a long moment.
Then nodded.
“I was awake,” she said gently. “I heard everything.”
Carol closed her eyes in shame.
Daniel exhaled slowly.
“I thought I married someone who was hiding from me,” he said.
He looked at Sophie.
“But you were just surviving in silence.”
Outside, sunlight poured through the curtains—the same curtains Carol had once pulled open in anger.
Now they stayed open.
Not to expose pain.
But to let life back in.
