CHAPTER 2 — The Envelope

Carol’s hands trembled as she held the sealed envelope.
Daniel rushed into the room, panic already written across his face.
“What happened? Is she—”
“Don’t,” Carol interrupted, voice breaking. “Just… don’t speak.”
Sophie lay motionless, her breathing shallow, eyes half-open but unfocused. The sunlight that once felt harsh now looked merciless.
Carol slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The first line made her stomach drop.
“If you are reading this, then I did not survive the wedding night.”
Carol staggered back.
Daniel grabbed the paper from her hands.
His eyes scanned faster than his mind could process.
And then he stopped.
“…What is she talking about?”
A second page fell out.
A medical report stamped CONFIDENTIAL.
A rare condition.
Late-stage complications.
High-risk pregnancy.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“She… she never told me she was pregnant.”
Carol whispered, horrified.
May you like
“Or she didn’t get the chance.”
From the bed, Sophie’s fingers twitched.
