Chapter 5 - What Graham Chose

The emergency custody hearing was scheduled for nine that morning.

I had slept less than forty minutes.

Marcus tried to convince me to remain at the hospital and appear remotely.

I refused.

I wanted the judge to see me.

Not the fictional version Graham had placed on paper.

Me.

A woman ten days postpartum.

A mother with hospital discharge instructions in one hand and evidence in the other.

The twins remained at the hospital nursery under observation with a nurse approved by both my physician and counsel.

When I entered the courtroom, Graham was already there.

Vivian sat behind him.

Edwin Pike whispered into his ear.

Graham looked at me.

For one second, his expression almost became the face I had loved.

Then Vivian touched his shoulder.

He looked away.

Judge Melissa Rowan reviewed the petition first.

She asked Graham whether his statement was accurate.

“Yes, Your Honor.”

My chest hurt more from that word than from the stitches.

Marcus stood.

“We have audiovisual evidence that directly contradicts multiple sworn claims.”

Pike objected.

The judge allowed the footage.

The room became quiet while Vivian’s voice filled the courtroom.

“Get out—and take your bastards with you!”

Graham closed his eyes.

The judge watched the entire clip without expression.

She saw the suitcase strike me.

She saw me ask for coats.

She heard Graham tell me to leave.

Then she heard Vivian discussing how the family could portray me as unstable.

When the video ended, Judge Rowan looked directly at Graham.

“Mr. Harrington, did your wife voluntarily leave the residence?”

Graham swallowed.

“It became a heated family argument.”

“That is not what I asked.”

He looked at Pike.

The judge’s voice sharpened.

“Your attorney cannot testify for you.”

“No.”

One word.

Finally.

“No, Your Honor.”

The judge turned to the filing.

“Yet you swore she left.”

Graham’s face reddened.

“I believed leaving was better for everyone.”

“For ten-day-old infants?”

He had no answer.

Marcus then introduced the earlier recording from the study.

Pike stood so quickly his chair scraped the floor.

“Your Honor, I need to clarify the context of that conversation.”

Judge Rowan looked at him.

“You will have the opportunity.”

The clip played.

Pike’s own voice described how Elena leaving the property would create a cleaner emergency custody argument.

Then Vivian guaranteed I would leave.

Pike’s face changed.

“I did not advise anyone to manufacture circumstances.”

Marcus replied immediately.

“Then perhaps you should be interested in the remaining recording.”

There was more.

I had not heard it yet.

Marcus had received it while we were driving to court.

The video continued.

Pike left the room.

Only Vivian and Graham remained.

Graham poured himself a drink.

Then Vivian said, “You only need to frighten her enough that she walks out.”

Graham stared into his glass.

“What if she refuses?”

Vivian answered without hesitation.

“Then put her outside.”

My husband did not object.

He asked only one question.

“And after that?”

Vivian smiled.

“After that, we decide how much she is willing to surrender to keep the babies.”

I stopped breathing.

This had never been about suspected infidelity.

The twins were leverage.

And Graham had known.
