Chapter 11 - Graham Comes Apart

Graham watched the nursery footage in Marcus’s office.
He did not speak when it ended.
Marcus closed the laptop.
I waited.
Finally Graham asked, “Who was she talking to?”
“We’re working on that.”
His hands trembled.
“My entire marriage.”
He looked at me.
“How much of it did she manipulate?”
“That is not a question I can answer for you.”
“She hated you from the beginning.”
“Yes.”
“I thought she was difficult.”
“She was cruel.”
“I know that now.”
I shook my head.
“No, Graham.”
He looked up.
“You knew then.”
The words landed harder than shouting would have.
“You knew every time she insulted my work.”
He looked down.
“You knew every time she called me cheap.”
Silence.
“You knew when she excluded me from family photographs.”
His face tightened.
“You knew when she announced at our anniversary dinner that you could have married better.”
“I apologized.”
“In private.”
He closed his eyes.
I leaned forward.
“You apologized where it cost you nothing.”
His eyes opened.
“That is what I finally understood in the snow.”
A tear slid down his cheek.
“I was a coward.”
“Yes.”
He did not defend himself.
For once, he simply accepted the word.
Then Marcus’s investigator entered.
“We identified the person on Vivian’s phone.”
He placed a call log on the desk.
The number belonged to Edwin Pike.
Graham’s attorney.
My stomach tightened.
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“Before we assume complicity, we verify.”
They retrieved Pike’s billing records through discovery.
The conversation in the nursery had lasted eleven minutes.
Pike had billed it as estate-planning consultation.
When confronted, he requested a meeting.
He arrived that afternoon with his own attorney.
Pike looked pale.
“I did not know she was fabricating infidelity.”
Marcus said nothing.
Pike continued.
“Vivian asked about establishing a family trust in the event Graham became primary custodian.”
“Why?”
“She said Elena intended to return to work immediately and might abandon the marriage.”
“Did you believe that?”
“I had no reason not to.”
“Did you later assist with the emergency petition?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Mrs. Harrington intended to force Elena from the home?”
Pike hesitated.
“I knew she wanted Elena to leave.”
Marcus leaned closer.
“That is not the question.”
Pike swallowed.
“I did not know Graham would physically put her outside.”
Graham whispered, “You heard Mom say she would make Elena leave.”
Pike looked at him.
“And you were standing in the room.”
Graham’s face collapsed.
There it was.
The sentence no lawyer could protect him from.
Everyone around Vivian had excuses.
But Graham had been my husband.
May you like
He had been the one person who did not get to say he was merely following her lead.
