Chapter 19 - THE KNOCK AT MIDNIGHT

Almost one year after the night I came home, I woke to Buster growling.
It was after midnight.
For half a second, I was back there.
Mud.
Music.
Cold air.
Lily whispering that I was a ghost.
Then I heard a knock.
I checked Lily.
She was asleep.
I walked downstairs.
Buster followed.
Through the window, I saw a woman standing beneath the porch light.
Rachel.
She wasn't supposed to appear without arranging it.
I opened the door but kept the screen locked.
"What happened?"
Her face was wet with rain.
"I know I shouldn't be here."
"Then why are you?"
She held out an envelope.
"Because I found this."
I didn't take it immediately.
"What is it?"
"Something Brad mailed before he was arrested."
My stomach tightened.
Rachel continued.
"It went to an old post office box."
"I didn't know it existed until the box was closed and the mail was forwarded."
I took the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
My house.
Taken before my deployment.
On the back Brad had written:
He thinks coming home means he wins.
Beneath that was another line.
But some things can't be put back.
I stared at it.
Rachel shook her head.
"I don't think it's a threat now."
"He's incarcerated."
"I know."
She looked toward the upstairs window.
"I just thought you should have it."
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Rachel whispered.
"How is she?"
"Better."
She nodded.
"Good."
She turned to leave.
"Rachel."
She stopped.
I didn't forgive her.
I wasn't ready.
Maybe I never would be.
But there was something I needed to say.
"Lily laughed at school today."
Rachel looked back.
"Really laughed."
"Her teacher said she wouldn't stop."
Rachel covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Thank you."
I shook my head.
"Don't thank me."
"She did the hard part."
Rachel nodded.
Then she walked away.
I closed the door.
Buster stared at the photograph in my hand.
I tore it in half.
Then again.
And again.
I dropped the pieces into the trash.
Some things couldn't be put back.
Brad had been right about that.
But he had misunderstood something.
Broken didn't always mean destroyed.
May you like
Sometimes it meant rebuilt differently.
Stronger in the places that mattered.
