Chapter 16 - THE LAST SECRET ACCOUNT

The account contained $41,000.
Some came from the memorial fundraiser.
Some came from my emergency savings.
Some came from credit opened using information taken from my files.
Rachel claimed she didn't know about the credit accounts.
Investigators believed her on some of them.
Not all.
Brad had forged signatures.
Rachel had signed other documents willingly.
Both had crossed lines long before either realized how far things would go.
The financial investigation became separate from the custody case.
That was a relief.
Because I wanted one thing above everything else.
Lily safe.
At the final custody hearing, the courtroom was quieter than before.
Rachel didn't fight for primary custody.
She didn't accuse me.
She didn't blame deployment.
Her attorney told the judge she accepted that Lily needed stability with me.
Supervised visitation would continue.
Any future change would depend on treatment, compliance, and the court.
When Rachel spoke, she looked at me once.
Then she looked at Lily's guardian.
"I told my daughter her father was dead because I wanted her to stop waiting for him."
Her voice shook.
"I convinced myself that if she accepted Brad, we could become a new family."
She swallowed.
"I punished her because she loved her father."
Nobody moved.
Rachel continued.
"There isn't an excuse for that."
It was the first completely truthful sentence I had heard from her since coming home.
The judge granted me sole legal and physical custody.
Rachel's visits remained supervised.
International restrictions stayed in place.
The divorce proceedings would continue separately.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited because the false military death story had become public.
I walked past them.
I didn't want Lily turned into a headline.
I didn't want to be a heroic father in some viral story.
I had missed what happened inside my own home.
No medal could make that feel heroic.
Katherine stopped beside my truck.
"You protected her when you learned the truth."
I looked through the window.
Lily sat in the back seat with Buster's head resting in her lap.
"I should have known sooner."
"You were deployed."
I nodded.
But regret doesn't always listen to logic.
My phone rang.
It was my commanding officer.
He had news.
My request had been approved.
I wouldn't be deploying again anytime soon.
I looked at Lily.

For the first time, I knew exactly where I would be sleeping that night.
Home.
