Chapter 1 - THE SOLDIER IN THE DOORWAY

Nobody moved.

Not Rachel.

Not Brad.

Not the dozen people standing around my living room with drinks in their hands.

The only sound was water dripping from my uniform onto the hardwood floor.

Lily was wrapped inside my jacket.

Her muddy bare foot hung beneath the fabric.

Buster stood beside me with his body pressed against my leg.

His eyes never left Brad.

Rachel's wineglass slipped slightly in her hand.

"Ethan?"

She said my name like she was looking at a dead man.

I stared at her.

Then at Brad's arm still resting around her waist.

"Take your hand off my wife."

Brad moved instantly.

Rachel's face had gone completely white.

"You weren't supposed to be home."

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Several guests turned toward her.

I felt Lily tighten her arms around my neck.

I lowered my voice.

"I wasn't supposed to be alive either, apparently."

Rachel looked at Lily.

Then at the mud covering my boots.

Something changed in her expression.

Fear.

Not concern for our daughter.

Fear for herself.

"Ethan, I can explain."

"Good."

I pulled my phone from my pocket.

"Start with why our five-year-old daughter was sleeping behind the shed in freezing mud."

One of the women near the kitchen covered her mouth.

Brad finally spoke.

"She wasn't sleeping out there."

I looked at him.

He swallowed.

"She was having a tantrum."

Lily buried her face deeper against me.

Buster growled.

I stepped forward.

Brad stepped backward.

"She is five."

My voice remained quiet.

"She is missing a sock."

I pointed toward the back door.

"Her hands are almost blue."

Brad looked toward Rachel.

That was all I needed to see.

They had already discussed what they would say if someone discovered Lily.

Rachel rushed toward me.

"Give her to me."

Lily screamed.

"No."

Her tiny fingers dug into my uniform.

"No, Daddy."

Rachel froze.

Everyone heard it.

Lily began shaking again.

"Don't let Mommy make you dead again."

The room changed instantly.

A few guests looked at Rachel with horror.

One man quietly put down his drink.

I kissed Lily's hair.

"No one is taking me anywhere."

Rachel whispered my name again.

"Ethan."

I ignored her.

I dialed 911.

Brad's eyes widened.

"What the hell are you doing?"

"Calling an ambulance."

Then I looked directly at him.

"And the police."

Rachel grabbed my wrist.

I pulled away.

"Do not touch me."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"They'll misunderstand."

I looked at my daughter.

At the mud.

At the purple skin around her toes.

Then back at Rachel.

"There isn't much to misunderstand."

She began crying.

Brad cursed under his breath.

I heard someone near the front door whisper that they should leave.

"No."

I raised my voice for the first time.

"Nobody leaves until the police arrive."

Silence.

Then one of Rachel's friends slowly lifted her phone.

"I recorded part of what happened earlier."

Rachel turned toward her.

"What?"

The woman looked terrified.

But she kept holding the phone.

May you like

"I recorded Brad taking Lily outside."

And for the first time that night, Brad looked more frightened than Rachel.
