CHAPTER 6 — The Secret Hidden in Dominic's Last Name

My father's words echoed through the ballroom.
"You'll understand exactly how expensive one act of cruelty can become."
No one moved.
Even Chloe, who had spent years believing she controlled every room she entered, looked suddenly small inside her glittering wedding gown.
Detective Harris broke the silence.
"Mr. Ashcroft."
My father nodded politely.
"Detective."
"I'll need a formal statement from your daughter."
"You'll have it."
"And your legal team may want to remain available."
"They already are."
Victoria glanced toward the ballroom entrance.
Within seconds, four more attorneys entered carrying briefcases.
The guests stared in disbelief.
One lawyer...
Two lawyers...
Then another...
And another.
This wasn't a family argument anymore.
It had become a legal operation.
Eleanor tried to recover her confidence.
"This is absurd."
"You think expensive lawyers frighten me?"
My father looked at her for the first time.
"No."
"I think the evidence will."
She folded her arms.
"I've admitted nothing illegal."
Victoria opened a leather folder.
"Actually..."
"You admitted directing a false accusation."
"You admitted encouraging the public humiliation of Mrs. Bennett."
"You admitted conspiring to damage her reputation."
The attorney beside her added calmly,
"Those admissions were witnessed by approximately two hundred individuals."
He looked around the ballroom.
"Many of whom recorded the incident."
Several guests immediately lowered their phones.
Too late.
Dominic stepped toward my father.
"Mr. Ashcroft..."
"I..."
"I owe you an apology."
Dad regarded him silently.
"I failed your daughter."
"Yes."
The answer came instantly.
No hesitation.
No anger.
Just truth.
Dominic lowered his head.
"I love her."
Dad's expression never changed.
"My daughter never questioned whether you loved her."
He paused.
"She questioned whether you would protect her."
The words struck Dominic harder than a slap.
I watched the man I had married.
For years I had defended him.
Made excuses.
Told myself he was trapped between loyalty to his wife and loyalty to his mother.
Now I saw something different.
He hadn't been trapped.
He had simply chosen the easier side.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Detective Harris approached my father.
"There's another issue."
Dad nodded.
"The original diamond ring."
"It still hasn't been recovered."
Amanda lifted her tear-stained face.
"I swear..."
"I lost it."
"Where?"
"I..."
She squeezed her eyes shut.
"I don't know."
"You don't know?"
"I hid it in the bridal suite."
"When everyone started looking for it..."
"I panicked."
"I went back."
"It was gone."
The detective frowned.
"So someone else found it."
Amanda nodded miserably.
"I think so."
The room filled with whispers again.
"There was another thief?"
"So Amanda didn't steal the real ring?"
"Then who has it?"
Detective Harris looked toward the security supervisor.
"I need every camera."
"Every hallway."
"Every employee entrance."
"Every loading dock."
"No gaps."
The supervisor nodded.
"We're already reviewing everything."
Just then...
One of my father's attorneys received a phone call.
He listened quietly.
Then walked over to Charles Ashcroft.
"Sir."
"The preliminary background investigation is complete."
My father accepted the tablet.
He read silently.
His eyes narrowed.
Very slightly.
Then he looked toward Dominic.
"Mr. Bennett."
Dominic straightened.
"Yes?"
"What bank does your family primarily use?"
The question caught everyone off guard.
"First Commonwealth."
"Why?"
Dad handed the tablet to Victoria.
She scanned it.
Then looked surprised.
"That's interesting."
Eleanor frowned.
"What does a bank have to do with anything?"
My father answered calmly.
"Perhaps nothing."
"Or perhaps everything."
Victoria turned the tablet toward Detective Harris.
The detective read the report.
His eyebrows rose.
"This was filed yesterday?"
"Yes."
"What was filed?"
Chloe demanded.
No one answered immediately.
Finally...
Victoria spoke.
"Three corporate accounts connected to Bennett Holdings attempted to transfer nearly eighteen million dollars yesterday."
Dominic blinked.
"What?"
"My family doesn't have eighteen million dollars."
"Exactly."
Victoria replied.
The ballroom fell silent.
Eleanor's confidence vanished for the first time.
"What accounts?"
My father folded his hands behind his back.
"The accounts opened using forged authorization letters."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"I believe you do."
He nodded toward one of his attorneys.
The attorney removed several documents from a briefcase.
"These transfer requests were flagged by Ashcroft Financial Security yesterday afternoon."
Dominic looked completely confused.
"My family has never done business with Ashcroft."
Dad met his eyes.
"No."
"But someone pretending to represent your family did."
Detective Harris slowly closed his notebook.
"I think we're no longer investigating only a stolen ring."
"No."
My father agreed.
"We're investigating financial fraud."
Every face in the ballroom changed.
The wedding had officially become something much bigger.
Chloe looked back and forth between everyone.
"Wait."
"What does this have to do with me?"
Dad answered without emotion.
"That depends."
"On what?"
"On whether this wedding was simply a wedding..."
"...or part of a larger plan."
Amanda suddenly gasped.
Her eyes widened.
"No..."
Everyone turned toward her.
She stared directly at Eleanor.
"You told me..."
Eleanor froze.
Amanda's voice trembled.
"You told me the ring scandal would keep everyone distracted..."
"So nobody would notice..."
She covered her mouth.
"Oh my God..."
Detective Harris stepped closer.
"Notice what?"
Amanda looked horrified.
"The documents."
"What documents?"
"The documents Uncle Richard was supposed to sign tonight."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Dominic stared at Amanda.
"What documents?"
Amanda looked like she wanted to disappear.
"I thought..."
"I thought everyone already knew."
"Knew what?"
She burst into tears.
"Aunt Eleanor said the reception was the only chance..."
"...because all the family trustees would be together..."
My father exchanged a long look with Victoria.
Then he quietly said,
"So that's what this was really about."
Detective Harris frowned.
"You know what she's talking about?"
Dad nodded once.
"Yes."
"I believe I do."
He slowly turned toward Eleanor.
"The ring..."
"...was never the objective."
He paused.
"It was the distraction."
Eleanor closed her eyes.
She didn't deny it.
She couldn't.
Because for the first time that night...
May you like
Someone had uncovered the real reason behind the wedding.
And it had nothing to do with diamonds.
