CHAPTER 4 — It Was Never About the Ring

The diamond ring lay on the marble floor like a spotlight.

For several seconds, no one dared move.

Even the musicians stood frozen.

The only sound came from Amanda's uneven breathing as she stared at the evidence that had just destroyed her lie.

Detective Harris stepped forward wearing a pair of latex gloves.

He carefully picked up the ring.

Without a word, he examined the inside of the band.

Then he looked at Chloe.

"This is your wedding ring?"

Chloe nodded immediately.

"Yes."

He held it up for everyone to see.

"The initials engraved inside read 'C.M. & N.C.'"

Chloe frowned.

"What?"

She hurried closer.

"No..."

Her face went pale.

"My initials are C.M..."

She swallowed.

"But my husband's initials are D.B."

The detective turned the ring slightly.

"There is no D."

"There is an N."

A ripple of confusion spread through the ballroom.

Someone whispered,

"So... that's not even her ring?"

Another guest pulled out his phone and zoomed in.

"Those aren't Dominic's initials."

Amanda looked ready to collapse.

Chloe grabbed the ring from the detective's gloved hand before he could stop her.

"This is my ring!"

"It has to be!"

The detective remained calm.

"Ma'am."

"Please don't touch potential evidence."

Too late.

Her fingerprints were now all over it.

She didn't even realize what she'd done.

Victoria Lang folded her hands.

"It appears the situation has become... more complicated."

"Complicated?"

Chloe snapped.

"Someone switched my ring!"

"No one switched anything."

Detective Harris replied.

"We're still determining whether this is even the ring you reported missing."

He turned to Amanda.

"When exactly did you last see the original ring?"

Amanda's lips trembled.

"I..."

"I don't remember."

"You don't remember?"

"It happened so fast."

The detective nodded.

"Interesting."

"You seemed very certain that Mrs. Bennett stole it."

Amanda couldn't answer.

I stood quietly, watching the people who had humiliated me only minutes earlier.

No one was looking at my torn dress anymore.

No one was calling me a thief.

Instead...

They were avoiding my eyes.

Ashamed.

Or afraid.

Dominic slowly approached me.

"Vivienne..."

His voice cracked.

"I'm sorry."

I looked at him for several seconds.

Then I asked the only question that mattered.

"What exactly are you sorry for?"

He blinked.

"I..."

"For not defending me?"

"For believing them?"

"For letting your mother tear my dress apart?"

"For standing there while our unborn daughter watched her father choose silence?"

His shoulders slumped.

"I made a mistake."

I shook my head.

"No."

"A mistake is forgetting an anniversary."

"A mistake is taking the wrong exit."

"What you did..."

I looked directly into his eyes.

"...was a choice."

He had no answer.

The wedding planner returned carrying another tablet.

"Detective."

"The security team isolated the footage from the bridal suite."

Detective Harris accepted it.

"Let's watch."

Chloe stepped forward.

"Fine."

"This will prove everything."

She had no idea.

The detective connected the tablet to the ballroom's enormous LED screen.

The lights dimmed.

Every guest turned toward the display.

A timestamp appeared.

3:42 PM. Bridal Suite.

The room on the screen was empty.

A few seconds later...

Chloe entered wearing a white silk robe.

She smiled into the mirror while adjusting her hair.

Then Amanda walked in.

The cousins laughed about something.

No audio.

Only video.

Amanda admired the diamond ring.

Chloe removed it from her finger and proudly handed it over.

Amanda slipped it onto her own hand.

Both women laughed.

Several guests smiled.

Nothing unusual.

Then...

A bridesmaid knocked on the door.

Chloe hurried out.

Amanda remained behind.

Alone.

She looked around carefully.

Then opened her silver purse.

The ballroom became deathly quiet.

Amanda reached inside...

...and removed another diamond ring.

Almost identical.

She compared the two side by side.

Gasps echoed through the room.

"What is she doing?"

"Oh my God..."

Amanda calmly placed one ring into her purse.

Then put the other on the dressing table.

Thirty seconds later...

Chloe returned.

Without looking closely...

She picked up the ring from the table and slid it onto her finger.

Not realizing...

It wasn't hers.

The video froze.

No one spoke.

Amanda covered her face with both hands.

Chloe stared at the screen in disbelief.

"What..."

"...what did you do?"

Amanda burst into tears.

"I..."

"I'm sorry..."

"I didn't mean..."

Detective Harris paused the video.

"So."

"You switched the rings."

Amanda nodded weakly.

"Yes."

"But..."

"But that's not all."

The detective looked at her.

"What happened next?"

Amanda began shaking uncontrollably.

"I..."

"I lost the real ring."

The ballroom erupted.

"You what?"

"I dropped it!"

Amanda sobbed.

"I panicked."

"I couldn't find it."

"So..."

"I put the fake one back."

"And when Chloe noticed..."

"I blamed Vivienne."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Chloe slowly turned toward Amanda.

Her voice was barely audible.

"You framed her..."

Amanda couldn't look up.

"Yes."

"You let them humiliate her..."

"...because you lost my ring?"

Amanda cried harder.

"I was scared."

"I thought everyone would hate me."

Chloe slapped her across the face.

The crack echoed through the ballroom.

"You ruined my wedding!"

Amanda stumbled backward.

"I know!"

"I'm sorry!"

"You destroyed everything!"

Detective Harris stepped between them.

"That's enough."

Amanda wiped away tears.

"I'm ready to cooperate."

The detective nodded.

"Good."

"Because I have one more question."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"Why did you already have a fake version of Chloe's ring?"

Amanda froze.

Every tear stopped.

The ballroom fell silent again.

She hadn't expected that question.

Neither had Chloe.

"What fake ring?"

Chloe whispered.

Amanda's breathing became shallow.

"I..."

"I..."

She couldn't answer.

Because the truth was even worse.

The fake ring hadn't been bought that afternoon.

It had been made weeks earlier.

Which meant...

Someone had been planning something long before the wedding ever began.

Victoria slowly looked toward me.

Then toward Detective Harris.

"This was never an accident."

The detective nodded.

"No."

He closed the evidence bag containing the fake ring.

"I believe this was a conspiracy."

And suddenly...

May you like

Every person in that ballroom realized the missing diamond had never been the real story.

Someone had planned to destroy me before the wedding even started.
