CHAPTER 11 — The Voice From the Past

The message remained on the ballroom screen.

Five words.

Five words that turned my entire life upside down.

HELLO, LITTLE SISTER. I'M BACK.

No one moved.

No one even breathed.

The guests who had remained behind after the chaos stared at the screen in complete confusion.

They didn't understand.

They didn't know the name Adrian Ashcroft.

They didn't know what those words meant.

But I did.

And suddenly...

The ballroom felt colder.

My father stepped toward the screen.

"Shut it down."

The security officer immediately moved.

"I'm trying, sir."

"Trying?"

The officer swallowed.

"The system has been locked remotely."

Victoria's face tightened.

"That's impossible."

"Not if someone has administrator access."

My father looked at her.

"And who has that?"

Victoria hesitated.

Only for a second.

But everyone noticed.

"Victoria."

She slowly answered.

"There are only three people with that level of access."

"Who?"

"Myself."

"The chairman."

She paused.

"And Adrian Ashcroft."

Silence.

Dominic looked at me.

"I told you."

I turned toward him.

"You told me a lot of things tonight."

His expression fell.

"I know."

"But I need you to understand..."

"I didn't know what Adrian was planning."

"Then why meet him?"

Dominic looked away.

"Because he came to me first."

"Why?"

He hesitated.

"Because he knew I was unhappy."

The words hurt.

Not because they surprised me.

Because they confirmed something I had always feared.

"Unhappy?"

I stared at him.

"You were unhappy?"

Dominic closed his eyes.

"Vivienne..."

"No."

"I want to hear this."

"After everything tonight, I deserve the truth."

He looked at the floor.

"I felt like I didn't belong in my own family."

I almost laughed.

The irony was painful.

"You felt like you didn't belong?"

I pointed around the ballroom.

"Do you know how many times I felt that?"

He had no answer.

"I never told you about Adrian because I didn't know if I could trust you."

My father's words cut through the room.

Dominic looked up.

"What?"

My father looked directly at him.

"Because three months ago..."

"When Adrian contacted you..."

"You didn't come to me."

"You didn't come to Vivienne."

"You kept meeting him."

Dominic's face changed.

"I was trying to find out what he wanted."

"And you thought keeping secrets from my daughter was the best way?"

Dominic lowered his head.

"No."

"I made a mistake."

Detective Harris stepped forward.

"We need to focus."

He pointed toward the screen.

"Someone just breached a secured corporate network."

"And they did it using Adrian Ashcroft's credentials."

He looked at my father.

"Is Adrian capable of this?"

My father was silent.

Then:

"Yes."

The answer shocked everyone.

"Your own son?"

My father looked away.

"Adrian was brilliant."

"More intelligent than anyone I've ever met."

"He understood systems."

"People."

"Power."

"He could convince someone to open a door..."

"...and never realize they had done it."

The screen suddenly changed.

The message disappeared.

A video file appeared.

Everyone froze.

PLAYING...

The ballroom lights dimmed.

A man's silhouette appeared.

He was standing in a dark room.

The camera angle hid his face.

But his voice...

His voice was calm.

Controlled.

Familiar.

"Hello, Charles."

My father's face turned pale.

The man continued.

"You always said the Ashcroft name was built on loyalty."

A pause.

"I spent twenty-eight years learning the truth."

The image flickered.

"I learned loyalty is just another word people use when they want control."

My hands moved instinctively toward my stomach.

My baby kicked.

Almost like she knew something was wrong.

The man's voice continued.

"And Vivienne..."

The entire room froze.

"Little sister."

A chill went through me.

"You spent your whole life believing you were protected."

"That our father kept you safe."

"But he never told you the truth."

My father stepped closer to the screen.

"Adrian..."

The voice continued.

"You deserve to know what happened to our mother."

The video stopped.

A new file appeared.

A document.

Old.

Scanned.

The title was visible.

ASHCROFT FAMILY INVESTIGATION REPORT

My father whispered:

"No."

Victoria looked at him.

"Sir?"

He didn't answer.

His eyes were fixed on the screen.

Because he recognized the document.

And whatever was inside...

He had spent decades trying to hide.

The file opened.

The first page appeared.

A photograph.

My mother.

A younger version of my father.

And a little boy.

Adrian.

Below the photograph were words:

FINAL REPORT — SUBJECT: ELENA ASHCROFT

My mother's name.

My heart tightened.

The second page loaded.

Then everyone saw the sentence that changed everything.

"Elena Ashcroft discovered that Charles Ashcroft was not the victim of Project Orion."

A gasp escaped Victoria.

My father stepped back.

"No..."

The next line appeared.

"Charles Ashcroft was one of the original architects."

The ballroom went silent.

I looked at my father.

The man who had protected me.

The man who had arrived to save me.

The man I trusted more than anyone.

And for the first time...

I wondered if I truly knew him.

"Dad..."

My voice shook.

"Is this true?"

He didn't answer.

That was worse than a denial.

"Tell me."

He looked at me.

Pain filled his eyes.

"I can explain."

The same words Dominic had used.

The same words everyone used when the truth finally caught them.

Detective Harris stared at the document.

"Mr. Ashcroft..."

"If this report is authentic..."

"You've been hiding evidence related to a decades-old investigation."

My father looked exhausted.

"I was protecting my family."

"No."

A voice came from the speakers again.

Adrian.

"You were protecting yourself."

The video returned.

This time...

The camera moved closer.

The man's face slowly appeared.

Older.

Scarred.

But unmistakably familiar.

My brother.

The man I had never met.

The man everyone believed was dead.

Adrian Ashcroft looked directly into the camera.

Then smiled.

"Hello, Vivienne."

"My little sister."

"I know you hate me right now."

"But soon..."

"You'll understand why I had to destroy everything."

He paused.

"And when you learn what our father did..."

"You'll help me finish what I started."

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then my father's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

And his face changed.

"What?"

A pause.

"No."

"That can't be."

He lowered the phone slowly.

I knew immediately.

Something else had happened.

"What is it?"

My father looked at me.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"The Ashcroft headquarters..."

"...has been taken over."

Detective Harris frowned.

"By who?"

My father looked toward the screen.

Toward the image of his lost son.

May you like

Then answered:

"By Adrian."
