Chapter 9 — The Pillow
Claire picked Ethan up for the weekend.
While Nathan attended a business conference, Vanessa insisted on staying home.
"I've been exhausted lately."
Claire agreed to bring Ethan back Sunday evening.
When they arrived...
Vanessa was upstairs showering.
Nathan hadn't returned yet.
Claire waited downstairs.
Ethan walked toward the guest bathroom.
As he passed Vanessa's bedroom...
He noticed something lying on the bed.
A flesh-colored object.
Curious, he stepped closer.
It looked like...
A curved silicone cushion.
Almost identical in shape to Vanessa's stomach.
Before he could examine it...
The shower stopped.
Water stopped running.
Ethan instinctively stepped backward.
Seconds later Vanessa emerged wrapped in a robe.
She froze.
Her eyes darted toward the bed.
Then toward Ethan.
For just one second...
Pure terror crossed her face.
She rushed into the bedroom and slammed the door.
A minute later she came downstairs smiling again.
"The baby's making me clumsy."
Ethan never mentioned what he'd seen.
But he didn't need to.
He already knew.
