Chapter 20 — The Envelope
Nathan confronted Vanessa that evening.
She walked into the living room smiling.
"You look exhausted."
Nathan placed a laptop on the coffee table.
"Sit down."
She noticed the paused security footage.
For the first time since entering the Whitmore family...
Her smile disappeared.
"You searched my room?"
Nathan pressed Play.
The video rolled.
Vanessa removing the fake belly.
Vanessa staging the bedroom.
Vanessa practicing tears in front of the mirror.
She didn't deny any of it.
Instead...
She laughed.
A quiet, unsettling laugh.
"You finally figured it out."
Nathan stared in disbelief.
"Why?"
"You destroyed my family."
"You lied about our child."
Vanessa calmly reached into her handbag.
She removed a thick sealed envelope.
"You think this was about becoming your wife?"
She slid the envelope across the table.
Nathan opened it.
Inside were copies of decades-old financial records.
Photographs.
A faded newspaper clipping.
One name appeared again and again.
Whitmore Pharmaceuticals.
Nathan frowned.
"My father's company..."
Vanessa looked him straight in the eyes.
"My mother died because of what your family buried thirty years ago."
Nathan's blood ran cold.
"You've spent months trying to expose a fake pregnancy."
She leaned closer.
"But you never asked..."
"...who I really am."
Before Nathan could respond, the front gate alarm sounded.
Daniel's voice came over the intercom.
"Mr. Whitmore..."
"You need to come outside."
"The police are here."
Nathan looked toward the window.
Three police vehicles had stopped outside the mansion.
But they weren't alone.
Behind them stood several black SUVs.
Men in dark suits stepped out, carrying official folders.
One of them looked directly toward the house.
Then raised a badge.
"This is a federal investigation."
Nathan slowly turned back toward Vanessa.
She was gone.
Only the envelope remained on the table.
On top of it lay a handwritten note.
