Chapter 8 — The Ultrasound Picture
Two nights later, Nathan proudly framed the baby's ultrasound.
"It's our first picture," he smiled.
Vanessa leaned against him.
"I'll treasure it forever."
The frame sat on the fireplace.
Everyone admired it.
Except Ethan.
He walked closer.
Very close.
Tiny letters appeared across the bottom.
Hospital name.
Date.
Patient ID.
He secretly photographed it with his tablet.
At school, he enlarged the image.
Something looked strange.
The printed date didn't match Vanessa's appointment.
Even stranger...
The patient's birthday had been partially cropped.
But one digit remained visible.
A "7."
Vanessa had been born on the 14th.
Not the 7th.
That afternoon Ethan asked casually,
"When's your birthday again?"
Vanessa smiled.
"April fourteenth."
