Chapter 10 — The Impossible Accident

Nathan organized a family picnic by the lake.
The weather was perfect.
Children played.
Couples laughed.
Vanessa wore a fitted maternity dress.
Everything looked peaceful.
Until a golden retriever sprinted across the grass.
The excited dog jumped against Vanessa.
She stumbled backward.
Everyone gasped.
Nathan ran toward her.
"Vanessa!"
She landed awkwardly against a picnic table.
For several terrifying seconds...
Nobody moved.
Then Vanessa slowly stood.
"I'm fine."
Nathan hugged her.
"The baby?"
"Perfectly fine."
She insisted on walking.
Laughing.
Eating.
Not a single complaint.
That evening Nathan praised her strength.
"You're amazing."
But Ethan couldn't stop thinking.
If she had truly fallen that hard...
Why wasn't she frightened?
Why didn't she ask for a doctor?
Why didn't she even touch her stomach afterward?
Instead...
She quietly disappeared into the upstairs bathroom for almost forty minutes.
When she came back...
Her stomach looked...
Slightly different.
Not larger.
Not smaller.
Just...
Higher.
As though someone had adjusted it.
That night Ethan opened his notebook.
He spread every piece of evidence across his bed.
The measurements.
The fake appointments.
The borrowed ultrasound.
The silicone cushion.
The plastic sound.
The strange fall.
Then he whispered to himself,
"I know what she's hiding."
At that exact moment...
A shadow paused outside his bedroom door.
Someone had been listening.
The doorknob turned slowly.
May you like
And Ethan realized...
He might not be the only one searching for the truth.
