Chapter 8 - ELLEN’S DECISION

Ellen met with an attorney named Grace Holloway.

I did not attend.

That was deliberate.

For two hours, I sat in a coffee shop across the street.

When Ellen came out, she looked exhausted.

But different.

Straighter.

More certain.

I stood.

“What did you decide?”

“I’m going to document it.”

I nodded.

“Okay.”

“I’m not doing it to punish him.”

“I know.”

“I’m doing it because I keep hearing myself say it wasn’t serious.”

She looked at the bruise still fading on her arm.

“It was serious.”

Those words mattered.

Michael had spent days minimizing what happened.

Cassandra called it emotional.

Ellen called it serious.

We went together to provide the evidence.

Ellen gave a statement.

The venue supplied the original files through proper channels.

I answered questions only about what I had personally observed afterward.

Then we went home.

No dramatic arrest happened that night.

No sirens.

No television cameras.

Just paperwork.

Statements.

Evidence preservation.

Reality moving slowly.

Michael learned about it the next morning.

He called Ellen.

She answered.

I sat across the room but could not hear him.

I watched her face.

At first, sadness.

Then pain.

Then something harder.

“Michael, stop.”

Pause.

“No.”

Pause.

“I did not do this to Cassandra.”

Pause.

“You put your hands on me too.”

Long pause.

Ellen closed her eyes.

Then she said, “I am your mother.”

Another pause.

“No.”

“That is exactly why this matters.”

She ended the call.

Her hands shook.

I crossed the room.

“What did he say?”

“He said I’m trying to destroy his marriage.”

I felt anger rise.

Ellen shook her head before I spoke.

“I answered him.”

“What did you say?”

“I told him Cassandra’s choices are not mine to protect.”

I smiled faintly.

Ellen looked at me.

“What?”

“I haven’t heard you talk like that in years.”

She almost smiled.

Then her phone rang again.

Cassandra.

Ellen declined it.

A message appeared.

If you loved your son, you would stop this before people get hurt.

Ellen read it.

Then typed one sentence.

People were already hurt.

She blocked Cassandra.

That evening, Michael’s company access badge was temporarily suspended pending the board review.

His attorney immediately sent corporate counsel a letter claiming retaliation.

The board responded with something Michael had not expected.

I had recused myself completely.

The independent directors had made the decision without me.

Michael could no longer tell himself his father was doing this.

For the first time, strangers were evaluating his behavior without family loyalty protecting him.
