Chapter 13 - WHEN CASSANDRA TURNED ON MICHAEL

Once the second camera angle appeared, Cassandra changed her account.

She admitted slapping Ellen.

But claimed Michael escalated the situation.

According to Cassandra, Michael grabbed his mother without being asked.

He was responsible for the shove.

She was responsible only for “one impulsive slap.”

Michael’s attorney immediately responded.

Cassandra had provoked the argument.

Cassandra had demanded Ellen leave.

Cassandra had slapped Ellen first.

Within a week, the united couple who accused us of attacking their marriage had separate attorneys.

Ellen heard about it from Grace.

She looked devastated.

“Is their marriage ending?”

“I don’t know.”

She sat quietly.

“This is what I was afraid of.”

I knew what she meant.

She had spent the first night after the wedding protecting Michael because she thought truth would destroy his new marriage.

Now the marriage was collapsing anyway.

I sat beside her.

“You didn’t cause this.”

She nodded.

But I could tell she did not fully believe me.

Three days later, Michael appeared at the gate.

No Range Rover.

No suit.

He drove a rented sedan.

He called Ellen.

“Mom, please.”

She looked at me.

“Do you want me to come outside?”

“No.”

That answer surprised me.

She walked to the gate alone.

I watched from the front window.

Michael stood several feet away from her.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then he started crying.

Ellen did too.

I could not hear the beginning.

Eventually, I stepped onto the porch.

Not close enough to interrupt.

Just close enough if she needed me.

Michael said, “I was angry.”

Ellen answered, “I know.”

“I thought you were going to ruin the reception.”

“I know.”

“Cassandra was screaming at me all morning.”

“I know.”

“She told me if I didn’t control my family, she would leave.”

Ellen wiped her face.

“And you chose to control me.”

Michael looked down.

“Yes.”

That was the first real admission.

Ellen’s shoulders shook.

Michael continued.

“I grabbed you.”

“Yes.”

“I pushed you.”

“Yes.”

“I saw you fall.”

Ellen covered her mouth.

“And I left.”

Michael started crying harder.

“I left you there.”

Ellen nodded.

“Yes.”

For several seconds, the only sound was traffic beyond the trees.

Then Michael whispered, “I’m sorry.”

No explanation.

No wedding stress.

No Cassandra.

No money.

Just the words.

Ellen stepped toward him.

I thought she might hug him.

She didn’t.

She said, “I believe you’re sorry.”

Michael looked up hopefully.

Then she continued.

“That doesn’t mean everything goes back to normal.”

His face fell.

May you like

Ellen shook her head.

“Normal is what allowed this to happen.”
