Chapter 12 - THE HOUSE THEY COULD NOT AFFORD

Michael and Cassandra did not close on the house.

They lost most of their earnest deposit.

Cassandra blamed Michael.

I knew because he told Ellen.

He called her after ten days of silence.

“Mom.”

His voice sounded different.

Tired.

Ellen put the call on speaker only after asking him.

“I need to talk to you.”

“I’m listening.”

“Cassandra says you and Dad intentionally ruined the purchase.”

Ellen took a slow breath.

“We never signed anything promising you that money.”

“You told me you wanted to help.”

“We did.”

“Then Dad changed his mind.”

“Yes.”

“Because of the wedding.”

“Yes.”

Michael sounded stunned by her honesty.

“You admit it?”

“Of course.”

“Mom, that’s financial punishment.”

“No.”

“It was a gift.”

“We chose not to give it after seeing how you treated me.”

“That is a consequence.”

“Not theft.”

Michael went quiet.

Then he said, “I’m sorry.”

Ellen froze.

So did I.

It was the first apology.

But then he continued.

“I’m sorry everything got out of control.”

Ellen’s face changed.

“That isn’t an apology.”

“What?”

“You’re sorry things got out of control.”

“Are you sorry you grabbed me?”

Silence.

“Are you sorry you pushed me?”

Longer silence.

“Are you sorry you left me on the floor?”

Michael exhaled.

“I was trying to keep Cassandra calm.”

Ellen closed her eyes.

There it was again.

Explanation before accountability.

She whispered, “Michael, when you are ready to apologize for what you did, call me.”

Then she ended the call.

I looked at her.

“That was hard.”

“Yes.”

“You did it.”

She started crying.

“I hated it.”

“I know.”

That evening, Michael called me.

“She hung up on me.”

“She set a boundary.”

“You taught her that word recently?”

I almost laughed.

“No.”

“She learned it because you forced her to need one.”

Michael went silent.

Then he said something I did not expect.

“Cassandra says Mom assaulted her first.”

I straightened.

“What?”

“She says the video doesn’t show everything.”

“It shows the entire corridor interaction.”

“She says Mom touched her.”

“She did not.”

“You weren’t there.”

“No.”

“But the camera was.”

Michael’s breathing changed.

“You always take Mom’s side.”

I closed my eyes.

“She is my wife.”

“Cassandra is mine.”

“Yes.”

“And somehow you think that means you had to choose your wife against your mother.”

“That is not marriage.”

“Marriage does not require you to help your spouse hurt someone.”

Michael hung up.

Two days later, Cassandra gave investigators the same story.

Ellen had supposedly attacked first.

Then the venue manager found a second camera angle.

It showed Ellen’s hands clearly.

At her sides.

Cassandra’s story collapsed in twelve seconds.
