Chapter 17 - The Whitmore Secret

Charles Whitmore had died five years earlier.

To Evelyn, he had been a demanding but honorable businessman.

The microfilm suggested something else.

For nearly twenty years, Charles had maintained a secret network of payments used to secure contracts, political favors, and regulatory approvals.

Daniel discovered the system after marrying Evelyn.

Vanessa discovered it while serving as Evelyn’s legal adviser.

Together, they began redirecting parts of the hidden money.

Martin Hale helped disguise the transactions.

Then guilt consumed him.

“This wasn’t about stealing a house,” Rebecca said.

“It was about controlling an empire built on secrets.”

Evelyn looked sick.

“My father built this.”

Thomas shook his head.

“We didn’t know.”

“Daniel knew.”

“And Vanessa knew more.”

That explained why Vanessa wanted the original ledger.

The physical binding contained the only microfilm connecting powerful people to the accounts.

If the information became public, dozens of careers could collapse.

Evelyn made a decision.

“We don’t pay her.”

Arthur stared.

“She has Clara.”

“We give her what she thinks she wants.”

Evelyn called Vanessa.

“I have the ledger.”

Vanessa gave her a location.

Blackwater Ridge.

The same cliff where everything started.

Midnight.

Evelyn understood the message.

She was being forced back to the place Daniel and Vanessa had tried to erase her.

State police wanted to surround the area.

Evelyn refused anything that could endanger Clara.

Instead, Rebecca arranged distant surveillance.

At eleven fifty-eight, Evelyn parked near the guardrail.

Rain had begun falling.

Exactly like that night.

Vanessa stood beside a black SUV.

Clara was inside.

Evelyn held the ledger.

Vanessa smiled.

“History has a sense of humor.”

“Let her go.”

“Ledger first.”

“Clara first.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“You were always stubborn.”

“And you were always afraid.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Of what?”

“Being powerless.”

For one second Evelyn saw the wound beneath Vanessa’s cruelty.

Then it vanished.

Vanessa opened the SUV door.

Clara stepped out.

Her hands were free.

She ran toward Evelyn.

Halfway there, another vehicle appeared from the darkness.

Detective Warren.

He stepped out.

Vanessa looked surprised.

“You weren’t supposed to come.”

Warren raised his hand.

“Plans changed.”

Then his attention shifted toward the ledger.

Vanessa suddenly understood.

“You’re working for someone else.”

May you like

Warren smiled.

“Always was.”
