Chapter 16 - The Woman Behind Daniel

Daniel was arrested that afternoon.

Detective Warren disappeared before state police reached the farmhouse.

Vanessa vanished from the Whitmore estate.

Her phone was found inside Daniel’s car.

Her passport remained upstairs.

But several pieces of Evelyn’s jewelry were missing.

So was Clara’s passport.

Evelyn rushed back to the hotel.

Arthur stood in the hallway.

His face was pale.

Clara was gone.

The room showed no signs of struggle.

On the bed lay the silver bird necklace.

Evelyn picked it up.

A folded note was beneath it.

YOU TOOK MY FUTURE.

I TOOK YOURS.

Evelyn could barely breathe.

Arthur said, “I left for four minutes.”

Security footage showed a hotel maid entering the room.

But the maid was not an employee.

She wore a wig.

Vanessa.

Police issued an alert.

Airports were notified.

Border crossings were notified.

Then Evelyn’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Vanessa’s voice came through.

“Say hello to Mommy, Clara.”

Clara spoke.

“I’m okay.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Clara, listen to me.”

Vanessa interrupted.

“She’s fine.”

“What do you want?”

“Daniel promised me half of Whitmore Medical.”

“You’ll get nothing.”

“Then Clara stays with me.”

Evelyn fought to remain calm.

“You won’t hurt her.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You still think you know what I will or won’t do.”

Evelyn remembered the car rolling backward with Clara inside.

“You need money.”

“I need freedom.”

“I can give you both.”

“Good.”

Vanessa gave instructions.

No police.

No tracking.

Twenty million dollars transferred to an offshore account.

Then she demanded the physical trust ledger.

Evelyn frowned.

“You know it’s already copied.”

“I don’t care.”

That told Evelyn something.

Vanessa wanted the physical ledger for another reason.

Maybe something hidden inside it.

After the call ended, Evelyn opened Martin’s ledger.

She examined every page.

Then Clara’s earlier words returned.

A bird protects its nest by making predators look in the wrong place.

Evelyn inspected the spine.

Inside the binding was a narrow strip of microfilm.

Rebecca held it toward the light.

Bank numbers.

Names.

Payments.

Not just Daniel.

Judges.

Executives.

Police officers.

Politicians.

Thomas whispered, “This is bigger than the trust.”

Evelyn stared at the names.

Vanessa was not trying to protect Daniel.

She was trying to protect an entire network.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

May you like

A name Evelyn knew very well.

Her own father.
