Chapter 13 - Evelyn Comes Home

Emergency lights turned the hallway red.

Daniel grabbed Clara.

Vanessa ran toward the study door.

Then the estate intercom activated.

A woman’s voice filled every room.

“Daniel.”

He froze.

Clara’s heart stopped.

Evelyn.

Vanessa whispered, “No.”

The voice continued.

“You’ve spent twenty-two months telling my daughter I was dead.”

Daniel stared at the ceiling speaker.

“That ends tonight.”

Security officers rushed toward the front entrance.

But the main gate had already opened.

Three black vehicles entered the estate.

Rebecca Sloan stepped from the first.

Thomas Whitmore exited the second.

Arthur emerged from the third.

He was no longer in custody.

The charges had been suspended after Rebecca delivered evidence of evidence tampering.

Then the final passenger door opened.

Evelyn Whitmore stepped out.

She wore a simple black coat.

Her hair was shorter.

A thin scar ran from her temple toward her ear.

But Clara recognized her instantly.

“Mommy!”

Daniel released her.

Clara ran.

Evelyn dropped to her knees.

They collided in the middle of the marble foyer.

For several seconds neither could speak.

Clara buried her face against her mother.

Evelyn held her like she would never release her again.

The guests who remained in the house began emerging from the ballroom.

Phones appeared.

Whispers spread.

Daniel descended the staircase.

“Evelyn.”

She slowly stood.

Her eyes moved toward him.

Then Vanessa.

Vanessa looked as if she had seen a ghost.

Evelyn said, “Take off my necklace.”

Vanessa’s hand rose toward the silver bird.

“Nobody is taking anything.”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“That necklace contains a serial-numbered diamond inherited from my grandmother.”

Rebecca stepped forward.

“And we have the insurance records.”

Vanessa ripped the necklace off.

She threw it onto the floor.

Clara picked it up.

Evelyn took her hand.

Daniel approached.

“You can’t just walk in here.”

Evelyn looked around.

“Daniel.”

A pause.

“This is my house.”

Daniel laughed.

“Not anymore.”

Rebecca opened a folder.

“Actually, Mr. Whitmore, the deed transfer you filed eighteen months ago was based on a declaration of presumed death.”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“Mrs. Whitmore is clearly alive.”

Rebecca continued.

“Which means the transfer is void.”

The room erupted in whispers.

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“And tomorrow morning, we discuss the money you stole.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

But Vanessa suddenly smiled.

Everyone turned toward her.

“You think she came back because she has enough evidence?”

Vanessa asked.

Evelyn stared at her.

Vanessa’s smile widened.

“She doesn’t.”

May you like

Then Vanessa looked at Clara.

“Because I know exactly what was in Locker 317.”
