Chapter 9 - THE WATER BENEATH THE ICE
The cold stole Nora’s breath.
She pushed Sophie upward.
The child’s hands caught the broken edge of the dock.
A security officer pulled her free.
Nora attempted to climb.
Margaret clung to her shoulder.
“You ruined everything.”
Water filled Nora’s mouth.
She struck the surface and shouted for help.
A rope landed beside them.
Nora grabbed it.
Margaret pulled her backward.

“Nora.”
He stood on the dock with the rope wrapped around his arms.
“Hold on.”
Nora tightened her grip.

She reached for Nora.

“Take the rope.”

“Take it.”

He did not ask Nora why she saved Margaret.
He understood.

Nora stood beside him.
She did not hide behind her father.

Sophie watched.
“What is that?”
“A paper saying Daddy and I will not be married anymore.”
“Is it because I spilled the sauce?”
Nora put down the pen.
“No.”
“It is because he chose to hurt us.”
“You did nothing wrong.”
Sophie nodded.
Then she placed her small hand over Nora’s signature.
“Can I choose you?”
