Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM AT SUNRISE
Hale Dynamics occupied the top twelve floors of a glass tower in Denver.
Evan entered the boardroom wearing the same shirt from the Christmas party.
His tie was gone.
His confidence had returned.
He believed corporate power could restore what Arthur had removed.
Nine directors sat around the polished table.
Margaret joined by video from a hotel suite.
Celeste sat beside Evan as financial adviser.
The emergency meeting began at 7:30 a.m.
Evan described Nora as emotionally unstable.
He claimed she had taken Sophie into the snow after an argument.
He said Arthur Ellis used the incident to seize company assets.
Then the boardroom screen changed.
Arthur appeared from his study.
Nora sat beside him.
Evan’s face hardened.
“You have no authority to attend this meeting.”
Arthur lifted the original shareholder agreement.
“I control forty-two percent of the voting shares.”
“You financed an early investment.”
“I retained voting rights under the contract you signed.”
“That contract is eight years old.”
“It remains active.”
Evan looked toward the directors.
“This is a family dispute.”
Nora spoke.
“No.”
“It became a corporate matter when you forged my signature and moved trust money through company accounts.”
Celeste leaned toward the microphone.
“That is an outrageous accusation.”
Nora displayed the bank statements.
Celeste’s consulting company had received eight hundred thousand dollars.
The payment description identified her work as confidential marital risk management.
One director frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Celeste said nothing.
Arthur explained that the protective clause suspended every benefit connected to Nora’s family trust.
Hale Dynamics’ primary credit facility had been secured through Ellis assets.
The lender had frozen access pending investigation.
The company could not process several acquisitions.
Evan stood.
“You are destroying hundreds of jobs to punish me.”
Arthur remained seated.
“You placed hundreds of jobs beneath fraudulent collateral.”
“You destroyed their security when you forged documents.”
A director asked Nora whether she intended to take control of the company.
“I intend to understand what was done in my name.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only answer I owe today.”
Evan attempted to call a vote removing Arthur’s rights.
The corporate attorney stopped him.
The original agreement required unanimous approval to modify Ellis-controlled shares.
Arthur would have to vote against himself.
Evan’s plan failed.
The board instead voted to appoint an independent investigator.
Evan was temporarily suspended as chief executive.
He stared around the table.
“You cannot do this.”
The chairman closed his folder.
“We already did.”
Celeste quietly closed her laptop.
Evan looked at her.
“You said the board would support us.”
“I said they would support stability.”
“And?”
She glanced toward the screen where Nora sat beside Arthur.
“You no longer look stable.”
Evan understood then.
Celeste was not loyal to him.
She had been loyal to whatever position promised wealth.
Margaret’s voice came from the hotel screen.
“Do not panic.”
“We still have the custody petition.”
Nora heard every word.
Evan immediately ended Margaret’s connection.
It was too late.
The board had heard her.
So had the independent investigator recording the meeting.
Arthur looked toward Nora.
“What custody petition?”
An electronic notification arrived on Nora’s phone.

He accused Nora of kidnapping the child from the family home.
