Chapter 7 - THE DOCTOR’S SAFE
Dr. Pierce survived.
He had been struck behind the head.
His clinic’s security system had been disabled with Evan’s company credentials.
Evan denied visiting the building.
Traffic cameras showed his car three blocks away.
His attorney claimed someone had borrowed it.
The doctor regained consciousness the next morning.
He asked for a lawyer before saying a single word.
Investigators searched the clinic.
They found hidden patient files inside the basement.
Several belonged to women married to wealthy men.
Each file included notes about emotional instability, financial dependence, and family trusts.
Pierce had helped husbands create medical narratives against their wives.
Some women lost custody.
Others signed property agreements while medicated.
Nora’s case was not unique.
Evan learned of Pierce through Margaret.
Margaret had known the doctor for nearly fifteen years.
Her late husband used him during their divorce.
Arthur listened to the findings.
“Patterns survive because each victim is made to believe she is alone.”
Nora thought about all the times Margaret called her dramatic.
The insult was not spontaneous.
It was part of a strategy used against women who questioned financial control.
Pierce eventually agreed to cooperate.
He claimed Evan attacked him after learning that federal investigators were approaching.
Evan wanted Nora’s file destroyed.
Pierce refused unless Evan paid him.
The argument became violent.
The doctor’s testimony placed Evan at the clinic.
It also revealed something Arthur had not expected.
Nora’s medical file contained DNA test results.
Evan had tested Sophie’s paternity shortly after birth.
The result confirmed he was her biological father.
“Why hide that?” Nora asked.
Pierce looked ashamed.
“Because Evan planned to challenge paternity if you ever sought divorce.”
“He knew she was his.”
“Yes.”
“He was prepared to say she was not.”
“Yes.”
Nora felt physically sick.
Evan had once threatened that no judge would give Sophie to a woman without money.
Now she learned he also planned to deny being the child’s father if it benefited him.
Pierce handed investigators another document.
It was an unsigned draft of an adoption agreement.
Margaret intended to become Sophie’s legal guardian if Nora was declared incompetent.
Evan would retain financial control.
Margaret would control the child.
The plan explained her obsession with discipline.
She did not see Sophie as Nora’s daughter.
She saw her as a Hale asset being raised incorrectly.
The doctor also admitted prescribing medication to Sophie.
Nora froze.
“What medication?”
A sedative had been added to a children’s allergy syrup.
Margaret gave it to Sophie before important dinners so she would remain quiet.
The spilled cranberry sauce occurred because Nora had refused to let Sophie take the syrup that afternoon.
Sophie had been more energetic than Margaret expected.
A normal child making a normal mistake destroyed their carefully managed image.
Arthur walked out of the interview room.
Nora followed him.
He stood near the courthouse windows.
“I should have asked more questions.”
“I kept telling you I was happy.”
“You also stopped visiting.”
“Evan said you made him uncomfortable.”
“And I accepted distance because I thought respecting your marriage mattered.”
Nora took his hand.
“We both believed silence prevented conflict.”
Arthur looked at her.
“It protected the wrong people.”
Pierce’s files created dozens of new investigations.
Several former patients came forward.
One woman remembered Margaret attending private consultations with her husband.
Margaret was not merely a cruel mother-in-law.
She had helped recruit clients.
An arrest warrant was issued.
Police arrived at her hotel.
