CHAPTER 4: THE THRONE WITHOUT A CAGE

By morning, the Vance estate no longer looked like a palace.
It looked like a crime scene.
News vans lined the gates. Reporters shouted questions over the iron fence. Former friends issued careful statements pretending they had always been concerned for Isabella.
Damian was arrested before sunrise.
He did not shout.
He did not beg.
Even then, he tried to look untouchable.
But when the police led him down the marble steps, he turned and saw Isabella standing in the doorway with Alexander in her arms.
No diamonds.
No gloves.
No perfect mask.
Just a woman who had survived him.
For the first time, Damian looked small.
Weeks passed.
The Vance board tried to remove her quietly.
They offered her money.
They offered her silence.
They offered her a beautiful house far away from the name.
Isabella refused all of it.
With Marcus Hale and Eleanor beside her, she took control of the trust Damian had tried to steal. She dismissed the men who had protected him. She opened investigations into the family’s hidden accounts. She turned the charity gala fund into a real foundation for women and children trapped behind rich doors.
The newspapers called her ruthless.
Society called her dangerous.
Isabella smiled when she read that.
Dangerous was what they called a woman they could no longer frighten.
One year later, the ballroom opened again.
But this time, there were no forced smiles.
No whispered threats.
No husband watching from the shadows.
Isabella stood beneath the same chandelier, holding Alexander’s hand as he took clumsy little steps across the marble floor.
Eleanor watched from a chair nearby.
Marcus stood at the edge of the room, smiling quietly.
The walls no longer felt like they were closing in.
They felt like they were listening.
A reporter approached Isabella.
“Mrs. Vance,” she asked, “do you consider this your throne now?”
Isabella looked around the room where she had once nearly broken.
Then she looked down at her son.
“No,” she said.
She smiled.
“This was never my throne.”
She lifted Alexander into her arms and walked toward the open doors, where sunlight poured across the marble.
“It was my cage.”
Outside, the gates of the Vance estate stood open for the first time in generations.
May you like
And Isabella Vance walked through them without asking anyone’s permission.
THE END.
