CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET IN THE CREST

No one moved.
The entire ballroom seemed to hold its breath.
Damian leaned closer, his voice low enough to be private, cruel enough to be a blade.
“Put the glove back on.”
Isabella did not.
Alexander whimpered against her chest.
She kissed the top of his head and turned toward the guests.
“I was told tonight was about charity,” she said. “About children. About protecting families.”
A nervous laugh moved through the room, then died quickly.
Celeste’s smile faded.
Damian’s father, Theodore Vance, rose slowly from his seat near the grand staircase. He was the founder of the family empire, a man whose name appeared on hospitals, museums, and court settlements no one spoke about.
“Isabella,” Theodore said, “this is not the time.”
She looked at him.
“That’s what your family always says.”
Damian’s jaw tightened.
Two security men near the doors shifted forward.
Isabella noticed.
So did the guests.
So did the cameras.
That was when the baby pulled at the embroidered edge of his blanket.
A small envelope slipped from the folded cashmere and fell onto the marble floor.
Damian saw it.
His face changed instantly.
Not anger.
Panic.
Isabella bent down before he could move and picked it up.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
Inside was a document she had hidden for months.
A medical report.
A birth record.
And a signed statement from the family doctor.
The guests stared.
Celeste whispered, “What is that?”
Isabella lifted her eyes.
“The truth.”
Damian stepped forward. “Enough.”
But she did not stop.
“My son was never supposed to survive,” Isabella said. “Not because of illness. Not because of fate.”
Her voice shook, but it did not break.
“Because Damian ordered the doctor to say I was unstable. He wanted me removed from this family after the heir was born.”
Gasps spread through the ballroom.
Damian’s expression hardened.
“That is a lie.”
Isabella turned the document toward him.
“Then why did you pay the doctor ten million dollars?”
Theodore’s face turned gray.
Damian reached for her wrist.
Before he could touch her, a man stepped from the crowd.
“Don’t.”
Everyone turned.
It was Marcus Hale, the Vance family attorney.
And in his hand was a phone recording everything.
Damian stared at him.
Marcus looked at Isabella.
“You asked me to come only if you spoke the truth publicly,” he said. “I’m here.”
Then he turned to the room.
“And she has more.”
Damian’s face went completely still.
May you like
Because the secret inside the envelope was only the first wound.
The second one would destroy the entire Vance name.
