CHAPTER 3: THE HUSBAND WHO LOST CONTROL

Damian laughed once.

It was a quiet, ugly sound.

“You think anyone here will believe a frightened wife and a tired lawyer?”

Isabella looked around the room.

The wealthy guests avoided her eyes.

That hurt more than she expected.

They had eaten at her table. Kissed her cheeks. Praised her gowns. Held her baby.

And now, when truth stood in front of them, they became statues.

Damian saw it too.

His confidence returned.

“You see?” he whispered. “No one saves a woman who benefits from the cage.”

Isabella’s throat tightened.

For a second, she almost believed him.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

An elderly woman entered with a silver cane and a black dress simple enough to insult everyone wearing diamonds.

The room shifted immediately.

Eleanor Vance.

Damian’s grandmother.

The only person in the family Damian had never managed to control.

Theodore stood.

“Mother?”

Eleanor ignored him.

She walked straight to Isabella and looked at the baby.

Then she touched the embroidered crest on Alexander’s blanket.

“This crest does not belong to Damian,” Eleanor said.

A stunned silence fell.

Damian’s eyes sharpened.

“What are you talking about?”

Eleanor turned to the guests.

“My grandson forged the inheritance documents. The controlling shares were never meant to pass to him.”

Theodore stepped back as if struck.

Eleanor continued, calm and merciless.

“They were placed in trust for Isabella’s child.”

Damian’s face drained of color.

Isabella could barely breathe.

“What?” she whispered.

Eleanor looked at her, softer now.

“Your son is not your prison, dear. He is your protection.”

Damian moved suddenly, reaching for the envelope in Isabella’s hand.

Marcus stepped between them.

Security rushed forward.

But the cameras were still recording.

The donors were filming.

The world was watching through dozens of hidden phone screens.

Damian froze, realizing too late that power only worked in darkness.

And Isabella had dragged him into the light.

Celeste Carrington took one step back.

Then another.

Theodore whispered, “Damian… what have you done?”

Damian looked at his wife.

For the first time, his silence had no weight.

For the first time, Isabella did not lower her eyes.

She handed Alexander to Eleanor and faced her husband fully.

“You told me no one would remember me,” she said.

Her voice was soft.

May you like

But the entire ballroom heard it.

“Now they’ll remember everything.”
