Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Funeral
Victoria arrived at the nursing home just before sunset.
The administrator led them quietly into Room 214.
An elderly woman sat beside the window, humming softly.
Her gray hair was shorter.
Her face was thinner.
But Victoria recognized her instantly.
"Mom..."
The woman slowly turned.
For several long seconds...
Nothing.
Then tears filled her eyes.
"Victoria?"
Mother and daughter collapsed into each other's arms.
Neither could speak.
Daniel quietly stepped outside with Lily.
Inside the room, the truth finally emerged.
Six years earlier, Richard had discovered that his wife planned to expose years of financial fraud committed through the family foundation.
If she testified, he would lose everything.
So he staged her death.
A corrupt doctor declared her dead after she had been heavily sedated.
A closed-casket funeral prevented anyone from seeing the body.
Richard forged documents transferring control of the estate.
Emily had discovered the scheme.
Before she could go to the police, Richard framed her for embezzlement.
She fled to protect herself.
Victoria buried her mother...
While her mother was still alive.
"But why Lily?" Victoria whispered.
Her mother smiled weakly.
"I met her while escaping one afternoon."
"She reminded me of you."
"I knew I wouldn't survive forever."
"So I hid the locket with someone Richard would never suspect."
"A child."
"I prayed one day it would find you."
Outside the room...
Police sirens echoed into the evening.
