Chapter 2: The Photograph Inside

The ballroom fell into a silence so complete that even the violinists stopped playing.
The bride, Victoria Langston, stared at the tiny photograph hidden inside the antique gold locket.
It wasn't the picture that terrified her.
It was what had been written beneath it.
In faded blue ink, in her mother's unmistakable handwriting, were five words.
"Find Lily. She is innocent."
Victoria's hands trembled.
"No..."
Her voice was barely audible.
"That's impossible."
The groom, Daniel, stepped beside her.
"What is it?"
Without answering, Victoria handed him the locket.
His expression changed the moment he read the message.
"I've seen this handwriting," he whispered.
"It belongs to your mother."
The guests exchanged nervous glances.
Victoria slowly knelt in front of the frightened flower girl.
"What did you say your name was?"
"Lily."
"Who gave this to you?"
The little girl wiped away her tears.
"A nice lady."
"When?"
"Last week."
Victoria froze.
"My mother has been dead for six years."
Lily shook her head.
"No."
"She wasn't dead."
"She was sitting on a bench feeding birds."
Gasps echoed across the ballroom.
Daniel gently placed a hand on Victoria's shoulder.
"Lily..."
"Can you tell us where?"
The little girl nodded.
"The old train station."
"She said someone was lying."
"She said everyone believed the wrong person."
Victoria felt the room spinning.
Because there had been only one person accused after her mother's disappearance.
Her younger sister...
Emily.
The woman everyone believed had stolen millions from the family before their mother supposedly died in a fire.
Emily had vanished the same night.
For six years, Victoria had hated her.
