CHAPTER 5 — The House Without Order

Weeks later, the backyard was empty.
No ribbons.
No fire pit gatherings.
No forced traditions pretending to be love.
Helen’s presence was gone—legally restrained, publicly exposed.
Rebecca had left the state.
No apology had ever come.
But something else had replaced the silence in the house.
Honesty.
James repaired the broken fence that summer morning.
The narrator sat on the porch steps holding Lily.
For the first time, the air did not feel like obedience.
It felt like survival finally becoming peace.
James didn’t speak for a long time.
Then he said softly:
“I thought silence kept this family together.”
He tightened a screw.
“It only kept it from breaking sooner.”
The narrator looked at Lily sleeping in her arms.
And for the first time since that firelit moment—
May you like
she wasn’t afraid of what came next.
Only of what might have happened if someone had stayed silent just a second longer.
